2012! Engine Noise

Hi everyone! I’m trying to figure out what the tapping noise is around the valve cover (sounds kinda like a Diesel engine). Sound is strong and loud only when giving engine gas (mostly uphill under load) and mostly during the first 45 min or so of startup (cold). Once engine is good and warm, it quiets down, but doesn’t go away now. Give enough gas to pass someone and you will hear it loud and clear. Can’t hear it at idle.
2012! 2.0 Automatic, 150k miles is about when it started to really be noticeable. I now have 175K miles on it. Meticulous about oil changes and maintenance. Use recommended oil in full synthetic changed every 6K. I drive like grandpa and never hard on the car. I start off slow to save gas. I was thinking maybe a stuck hydraulic lifter. Dealership is no help and recommended some Lucas Oil Additive which I did last oil change, but was no help. Anyone else experience this?? Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Kevin

It really depends on just how loud this is?

GDI fuel injectors are known for making a tapping sound (tick tick tick). One of the reasons for that nice insulated engine cover was to keep the noise down.

Since it get's really loud when passing, to the point it's alarming, it's probably time to have a good mechanic check it out. Even with the meticulous service you've given it (good on you!), it's still a 4 cylinder engine with 175,000 miles.

This may be especially important with concerns about worn piston rings and possible engine seizure.

Has it been burning any oil? Have you noticed any gas, or gas smell in the oil when changing your oil?

Also consider valves:
The most common cause of engine ticking is a noisy valve train. Your valves have to open and close once for every 2 times your engine spins around. ... If there is excessive play in these components you can usually hear them “tick” as they shift around while your engine is running.

This engine is not a GDI.
No oil burning or leaking.
All oil changes at Kia Dealer with Kia Oil Filter
Well I'd take a closer look at valves then. Certainly would be a consideration with that high mileage.
