Random Horn Problem?

So, first, yes I know I'm weird, my family tells me so. Now that that's out of the way....

Often times for no apparent reason - while driving down the road - if no one is around, I'll just honk the horn. I don't know why - I just do. Sometimes I even honk the beat of the tunes I'm listening to at the time...

Anyway - point is - it seems my Horn is randomly not working. The other day I was driving down the road and started to honk and nothing....now I know the silly little horn isn't that loud - so I muted the radio thinking I just wasn't hearing it - nothing. Rolled the windows up to block the wind noise - nothing.

Got where I was going, locked the car - *beep*. Made me do a double take...I thought the horn wasn't working. I've started paying attention. There's been a time or two when I'd double tap the lock button and the lights would flash but the horn wouldn't honk - though most of the time it does honk when I lock it. However, when I press the horn on the steering wheel - sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't.

I've not called the dealer yet or taken it in - mostly because I have to go out of my way to do so - and it's not recreateable which means they probably can't do anything.

Thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced the same issue...

Oh - it's s 2011 Molten Plus for what it's worth.

PS: Totally off topic in my own thread here - but I'm told the Red is the softest pigment - my hood in 5 months has loads of paint chips. :-( This makes me very sad.

I also had the intermittent horn issue. It went on for about 2 weeks after I purchased it. After starting the car and getting up to cruising speed it would cut out. It was driving me crazy. I scheduled an appointment to have it looked at but never kept it because it started working consistently. It hasn't cut out for about 2 months now. I found this online regarding a 2010 Kia Soul horn issue:

"Well the most common things for an intermittent horn to work are usually an issue in the horn button itself or a issue in the steering column.
Sometimes the horn will not work if the button or pad is misaligned. This can happen from multiple ways. say something was loose and you turned the steering wheel the piece might have moved out of place and now no longer will function correctly.
The other common issue is that the wiring that goes down the steering column gets damaged or is not contacting correctly. Depending on the specific location of the steering wheel can cause the horn to work sometimes and not work sometimes.
My suggestion would be to turn the steering wheel left to right multiple times and try to use the horn at the same time. If the horn begins to act up or doesn't work at all then the issue would be related directly to either the horn button or wiring in the column.
i would certainly be sure that the dealer gets this repaired for you. Having the horn is a safety issue and should be fully functional at all times. I can"t believe they wouldn't try to at least perform a repair of any sort."

Thanks everyone for the info and laughs. I"ll try the steering wheel horn thing and see what happens...

And if my Neighbors cut the wire - then it wouldn't work at all - unless they are hiding under my hood and randomly cut and resplice it. LOL!

I'm more apt to believe that Hammy is mad at me honking his horn all the time!

Umm, if it's cutting out at highweay speeds, note that the horn location is up front, in front of the radiator kinda centered on the passenger edge of the radiator. It's possible either the plug isn't fully seated or faulty, and the air pressure at highway speeds is causing it to cut out.

FWIW Here's my advice:
1. Take it to the dealer and make sure it's working well
2. Remove the factory horn, throw it as far as you can, insert a relay, and install something that speaks in, well, a slightly more authoritative tone! That stock horn says "umm, pardon me, will you please kick sand in my face?". Get something that says "GEDDOUDDAMYWAY!"

For what it's worth... but make sure the dealer takes care of any underlying wiring issues first!

I added a Wolo Bad Boy horn. Mounted to the right of the
battery. A friend made a small right angle bracket and I
used one of the bolts holding the fuse box to hold the bracket.
Horn has it's own relay and it's switched by the stock horn's
wiring. I left the oem horn in the circuit. Placed a switch inside
the passenger compartment in order to turn the Wolo Horn off
once I stop so it doesn't wake up the neighbors when I lock it
with the remote.

I'm happy with a much louder horn. OEM one is PATHETIC.
Could also find a set of horns at a junk yard from a Honda
van and have REAL HORNS on your Soul.

I installed a horn that actually has an ear piercing "chirp" that is part of the security system, but can be operated independently. It will just about make ears bleed, or bladder involuntarily release so don't demonstrate it with someone sitting in the car. First time I ran it I feared for the glass cracking. LOL

KIA has a great warranty so take it back to your dealer and let it be their problem! ;)

Horn sometimes not working

I too have the same problem with my horn going out and then later back on. I took it to the dealer where I bought my car. The whole day they said they tried my horn, but it was working. They claimed they couldn't detect the problem until the horn was unheard. Frusterated, I'm going to another dealer and writing KIA about this situation.

Horn problem

For those of you with horn problems, I urge you to call KIA directly to their consumer complaint department. 1-800-333-4542 If enough people call, maybe they will check into it.

She said the dealers were right in that if the car comes in and the horn is working at that point in time, they really can't do anything. It has to come in broken for them to diagnose. Plus the fact that they haven't gotten any reports of horn problems....so I would urge those of you that do to call in. Thanks!

Has anyone had any luck getting a resolution at the dealer? I agree a faulty relay seems like the prime suspect but has anyone got a dealer to correctly diagnose and repair the issue?

My girlfriend picked up her brand new 2011 Soul about 4 months ago and I first noticed the problem a few weeks ago when I was nearly side-swiped by a pickup driver who didn't check his blind spot. It's become more frequent now and definitely something I want repaired soon. I haven't went to the dealer yet but before I do I'd like to narrow down the culprit.

When I added a Wolo Bad Boy horn I used the OEM circuit to operate a seperate relay. I grounded the horn directly to the battery which I may change to the body to tie all grounds at nearly the same potential.

I noticed on occassion IF I have the brake lights on at the same time as the horns the Wolo Bad Boy doesn't always come on full blast. I think it's ground being directly on the battery. Sounds unlikely but I have noticed when adding additional brake or turn signal lights it's best to ground at same point as the OEM lights.

Soul Horn Problems

I constantly have had the very same issue. I got my soul from Central Kia in Plano, TX.

I was driving through Plano last Saturday and I tried honking the horn all the way to the dealership on the Freeway; the whole time it wasn't working, then as soon as I make a U-turn at the exit the horn starts working again. I still went into the service department and raised hell. And the service manager refused to even look at the Soul. He says that they can only look at it from Monday to Friday, and I would have to pay for a rental car. Forget that BS. The Central Kia service department is horrible. Do Not go there for service. If you're in the DFW area, go to Southwest Kia and get better service.

Sorry to hear you are having such trouble. Luckily my dealer replaced it for free as soon as I said "I think it's a safety issue". I've not had an issue with it since - and I honk my horn a lot. ;-)

If it is also faulty with the key plip answer back then it has nothing to do with the switch or the steering column. The relays are all identical so just swap one with the horn and see if it is cured. The more likely problem is with the horn itself because if horn relays were intermittent then the identical light relays would be doing the same and we would have iffy lights.

I swapped my stock horn for a pair of wind tone horns and they have never been a problem.

Ok, having the same issue here. Horn does not work sometimes, and when you lock with the fob it doesn't honk sometimes.
The funny thing is, I can tell when it will honk or not, by the sounds of the first click of the lock button. When it isn't going to honk the lock sound is softer than when it will honk. I know that sounds stupid, but I have been paying attention to it the last couple of weeks.
I say it is about 50/50 now if it will work or not.
Guess it is time to take it in and have them have a look see.

I have the same problem. I have seen my horn not work on a cold day say about -20 degrees Celsius. Its very annoying. The problem cannot be reproduced consistently. The dealer once replaced my relay saying that the relay is faulty. After the relay replacement the problem has improved but not completely solved. I will know more this winter.
