I've never had a car with the +/- shifter before. I've also never driven a manual personally as well, but I did grow up riding with my aunt who always drove manual so I have a vague idea on how it works. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
You have the gas/brake/clutch pedals in a manual. To shift, you release the gas, press down on the clutch, than shift up or down gears. As your speed goes up, you shift to higher gears. Higher gears are better for cruising, but lower gears better for acceleration. There are points where it is best for certain cars to shift, and these points vary from car to car.
I read the manual, and it said the automatic shifter will automatically downshift when you brake. You just have to know when to shift up right?
So to the main part of the question. How do I best use it? Does it help with fuel economy or is it just for fun on the highways. So if I'm going 70 on the hwy and I want to pass a truck, I move out, shift down, accelerate past them, than shift back up?
