Push button start for Kia Soul.

I am spark plug, oil change level home mechanic.

I installed this recently and what follows is install notes and review.

The install video does a great job with the take apart and connections.
I was concerned for figuring out electrical clips, but all went well with the electrical clips.
I was concerned for tapping (splicing) into the brake switch, the pics in the video were great for this.
The video does not give much (any) advice or instruction for where to put the sensor coil or the control box.
I had put the control box inside the steering column housing, more or less where the ignition switch parts were.

I initially put the sensor coil between the radio and steering column, reaching through and using tape to secure the sencor coil.
In this space, there is not visibility to confirm a secure install.
Concern for if the tape mount comes undone and the sensor coil falls or moves inside the dash, fob will not work (out of range).
After some reflection, I told my wife to put in in valet mode until I could better secure the sensor coil.

Today,
I did the take apart to check/move sensor coil.
I found the sensor coil mount tape had become a bit loose.
So I decided for sure to move it to a location I could 100% confirm secure tape mount.
I noticed the sensor coil is just a bit larger than the 'push to start' button.
I disconnected to start button wire from the control box.
I threaded to start button wire through the sensor coil.
I mounted the sensor coil inside the steering column around the start button.
The sensor coil works great here
And I have no concern for it falling off and loose inside dash.

I had thoughts about the sensor coil being right there at the start button ignition
and being easier access for a theif than if hidden away from the system.
My thought on this moved toward...
The cyclinder/switch is gone.
Kia Boyz break into column, but no switch to be turned with USB or screwdriver.
Professional car thief will know how to actually hotwire, so hidden location of sensor coil will not affect a professional thief.

Regular Mode
Hold the fob to the sensor for a couple seconds, 2beep system unlock.
auto relocks in 30 seconds, 1beep system lock.
or hold fob to sensor for a couple seconds, 1beep system lock.

VALET / SERVICE MODE
Hold fob to sensor for couple seconds to unlock,
continue to hold fob to sensor for 5 to 10 seconds, quick 4beep unlock hold.
system auto-relock disabled. fob not required to start car.
This is VALET / SREVICE mode.
Tested and found that service mode does not stick through battery disconnect cycle.
put into service mode.
disconnect battery,
work on car,
reconnect batter,
hear 1beep system lock.
SO, Service tech will need fob and sensor coil location if battery will be disconnected.

Placing the antenna coil around the start button makes describing to the service department where to hold the Ghost Key fob much simpler and straightforward.

A 'today' experience update.

With the key ignition...
Key fob door button to unlock door.
Sit in car seat.
Put key into ignition start car.
Key is 'stored' in ignition.
Stop car.
Turn off ignition via key.
Remove key.
Get out of car with key in hand.
Habitually I use button on door panel to lock doors when getting out.

With Ghost Key...
Key fob door button to unlock door.
Sit in car seat.
Hold Ghost Key fob to sensor.
Press foot brake and start button to start car.
Where to 'store' key?
Already sitting, so pants pockets not readily accessible.
Concern for placing fobs in cupholder or other place 'off body' as key/fob not required to turn off car or lock doors.
Fear of forgetting fob inside and locking myself out.

From your description I take it your Kia fob and Ghost Key fob are together on the same key ring.

What I've thought (well one thought) when considering the Ghost Key system for myself would be to carry the Ghost Key fob on a separate retractable belt (loop) clip key ring.

For your case
  1. Carry Ghost Key fob on retractable key ring --> requires establishing new habit
  2. Kia fob button to open door
  3. Place Kia fob in pocket --> new habit
  4. Sit in car seat
  5. Extend Ghost Key fob to antenna to disarm, retract to belt clip
  6. When exiting vehicle use door panel button to lock doors --> this habit remains the same

In my case (if I were to install the Ghost Key system)
  1. I've previously considered getting a retractable key ring to use for one (or possibly both) of the sets of keys I carry everyday, so the thought is already there
  2. I already carry a watch on a belt loop clip - as I dislike wearing wrist watches - so no new habit to develop there in terms of remembering to clip an item to my pants belt loop when getting ready to leave home
  3. I could add the Ghost Key fob to the watch clip and attach both to a retractable key ring
  4. When parking my car I habitually use my Kia steel key to lock the doors - not the door panel switch - so the change here for me would be remembering to fish my Kia steel key out of my pants pocket since it would not already be in my hand due to removing it from the ignition
  5. I could see myself occassionally unintentionally simply walking away without locking the car doors
  6. Fear of not locking the car

Here's what I'm gonna try...
I have an idea to put a stick on hook on the steering column right near the start button. Very near where the key would be when running. Easy storage while driving. And reminder to take keys when pressing button to stop engine.

I was searching amazon for a small stick on utility hook. A bunch of rigid hooks popped up.
Then these appeared....
Black, matching the steering column.
Silicone, soft rubbery material.
Fun, Kinda goofy looking....

I may also try a 'FOB' label next to the door panel door lock switch as a visual reminder.

Where to put fobs while driving?

I received the silicone keyhook.
While I was 'dry fitting' on the steering column,
I had the idea of putting in somewhere on the drivers door.
THEN I stumbled across this idea...

The fob fits nicely in the finger space of the window buttons.
It is in the way of using the window buttons.
Which is problematic for the front windows.
but not so much for the back windows switches which I very rarely, if at all, use.

I think I'll hold off attaching the silicone keyhook until I give this a try.

I place my key/fob in my shirt chest pocket and drive on. When I exit my Soul, I lock the doors and secure the key/fob in my pant pocket.

As a teenager I had an automatic habit (sometimes completely unconscious) of right as I was closing the drivers door I hit the lock plunger to lock it.

One time I left the keys in the car. And was thus locked out. From that day forward I've always carried a spare key on me.

i installed the antenna coil in the console compartment by the radio. very convenient for me. the hard part was burying the control module in the dash and installing the connector tap for the brake switch. a few cuts and scrapes on my big ham hands. has worked perfectly for a year and a half.

Good Day All,
I am now short of 2 years with the Ghost Key system. Since my retirement, I have been using my Soul more often, for shopping, traveling, church matters, small jobs and subbing at schools. I believe I may start my Soul 5 to 8 times a day. It is holding up well.

What is the procedure when taking the car in to be serviced - Do you have to show them where the antenna is hidden in order for them to be able to start and drive the car?

I found the sensor antenea to be just the right size circle to fit around on the inside side of the start button.
So I hold the fob upto the start button.
I found this easy to explain to service depts.

Also,
Valet mode works great UNLESS the battery gets disconnected during servicing.
The Valet kode resets to off with power loss cycle.
