That’s not going to help.

That settlement is for the 2.0L/2.4L Theta II engine. The Soul does not use the Theta II engine. The Soul uses the 1.6L Gamma and 2.0L Nu engine which are not part of that settlement.

The most the Soul engines have is the KSDS recall which extends the engine warranty to 15 years and 150K miles for certain failures (rod bearings, I believe). There is no lifetime warranty on any Soul engine.

2015 Soul! burning oil, I am in a dealer oil consumption test right now. Have burned 2.1 qts, in a 1,000 mile check and told that it was normal. Have seen the class action law suit for this problem. Also told by service manager the car can quit running at anytime. This dealer advertises a forever warranty. This is false advertising if 2.1 qts. Every 1,000 miles that’s 14.5 qts between every oil change. Plus it can stop running at anytime and they know this but offer no solution. False advertising.
What is the mileage on your 2015 Soul?

Are you the original owner?

This information will help the rest of us to understand your situation. Also, did you have all the service recalls done? I believe if you are in good standing on those, the warranty may be extended to 15 years, provided recommended service intervals were followed.

It looks like “Terry” is a one post wonder. 😕

Terry also seems like an embellisher at the very least. "Was told 2.1 quarts in 1,000 miles was normal". Supposedly. I find that hard to believe.

Maybe he was told he just doesn't qualify for a free engine replacement. That would be a lot more believable.

Dealers usually say burning 1 quart per 1000 miles is “normal” and I think that’s a bunch of hogwash. Cars shouldn’t use any noticeable oil over a 3000 mile oil change interval. So I don’t know what the OP is talking about, or maybe their dealer is being less than honest (that wouldn’t be shocking).

But that “forever warranty” or sometimes very long 200k mile or so warranties some dealers offer have so many terms and conditions it’s not even worth it. Usually you have to have all recommended services done at that dealer for it to apply and they’ll still find some way to deny you. Maybe you didn’t rotate your tires on time?

But we’ll never know from the one and done. It seems to me from “2.1 qts. Every 1,000 miles that’s 14.5 qts between every oil change.” that they were doing oil changes every 7500 miles or so. Too long!! No wonder it was burning oil.

And I always see people mentioning the non existent engine settlement on Soul engines (they’re always referencing the Theta engine settlement and those engines aren’t used in Souls)

My 2017 Soul had 123,000 miles and is burning oil like crazy. I was told ok to bum a quart every 1,000, but wasn't even driving that much and was burning like 2 quarts every 500 miles. Without warning and shortly after a “top off” back to normal levels I noticed a loss of performance, the following day engine knocked reviewed oil down 2 quarts! Too late spun a bearing. I was on top of oil burning problem, but having to add or check your oil before and after every 20 min trip is crazy. Like another post stated you would be adding 14 quarts between changes. I was changing every 3k and on top of the issues but it got worse without warning. My mechanic said the GDI engines are a poor design, and I would need a new engine, at the cost around 6k. He did NOT recommend, at all.Told me to put some motor honey in and trade it in. I did and was lucky, I made it to a dealers lot a day later, and it died. Got 4k at the trade in for a VW SUV, I'm gonna miss old red, she was a very reliable car until the last few months of her life. RIP RED12

My 2017 Forte is starting to use just a little oil. It's been 3,200 miles since my last oil change and I had to add 1/2 quart to it yesterday to top it off. At 142,000+ miles, I can live with that.

I had the combustion chamber cleaning done at the dealership and it seems that my 2014 Soul with 99,600 miles no longer burns oil. I have been checking weekly.

How many miles ago did you have it done?

How did it cost?

I have a 2014 Soul, 104,000mi, and in the last 3,000mi (ish) it’s been burning a lot of oil. I’ve had to add nearly 3qt. I’ve found that there is a service bulletin and a lawsuit about this issue. The service advisor in Downey, CA said they’d do a consumption test. If it’s more than 1qt for 1,000mi it’s considered excessive and they recommend a combustion chamber cleaning. About $900 out of pocket since I’m out of warranty. Do another test and if that doesn’t do it then a complete engine rebuild. About $8,000…. not sure if the car is worth saving at that point. Even the chamber cleaning sounds excessive. As we speak I’m having them do the PCV valve cleaning.

The PCV valve is a $10 part that you can easily change yourself. If it's never been changed in the last 106,000 miles it's probably time.

Which engine is in your Soul? What were your oil change intervals & type of gas used (top tier?) Any use of Techron?

Please keep us posted on your Case progress.

I have the 2L engine. My oil change intervals are about 3000-3500 usually at Valvoline. Synthetic blend for high mileage. I’ve never changed the PCV valve so I got that done. It cost me $130 at the dealer today. Gas I usually use Costco or Arco which are both top tier I don’t really ever use chevron since it’s expensive.

I also have the 2L engine. I was changing the oil every 7,500 miles as directed by the dealer. Always purchase top tier gas. I did buy a PCV valve but have been waiting to install it while observing the oil level at each gas fillup for a bit. Dealer now recommending oil change intervals of 5,000 miles since I am right around 100K miles now.

My 2015+ 2.0L goes though about a quart a month and my driving is about 4000mi a year the past two years. Oil changed every 3 months as I don't drive enough to do it every 3000mi. It idles rougher than any engine I've driven in my 30 years of driving. Every week or so it seems like it wants to stall at the first stop light of the day.

4000mi/yr divided by 12mo/yr equals 333mi/mo.

1 quart of oil per month is 1 quart every 333mi which is way worse than (I believe) Kia's usage threshold of 1qt/1000mi.

How many miles on the car?

Are you the original owner and thus have the 10year/100K warranty?

Take car to have a dealer check it out. Based on reading forum posts I think the dealer will likely want to do an oil consumption test. Based on your post your car will easiliy fail that test. Maybe you get a new engine.

With losing 1 quart per 333mi about the only reason for you to actually change oil is to have a maintenance paper trail to satisfy Kia that you are performing proper oil change maintenance on the car. And to change out the oil filter.

In reality you're already frequently changing the oil by adding 1 quart a month (every 333mi).

I believe Kia recommends (perhaps someone will correct me if wrong) oil should be changed every 6mo or 3750mi whichever comes first.

Suggest you change your every 3mo oil change frequency to every 6mo. And thus cut your oil change costs - money, time, effort, etc. - in half.

Only downside with the consumption test is (I have read) seals up your engine for a full 1,000 miles which could be 3 months and 3 quarts low in this case. I'm not sure my OCD would permit me to not check oil level for 3 months or let it get 3 quarts(!!) low (!!!)

If he is under warranty and can take the risk then of course it is a good plan but the thought of it gives me the willys o_O.

If I knew my car was burning a quart of oil every 300 miles I’d insist they check it in no more than 500 miles or give me some written guarantee that if the engine blows up before 1000 miles they’ll warranty it. That would make me nervous too.
