anyone do anything to cover the spare tire and use the extra space for bulky object storage?

Was thinking I might be able to fashion something out of luan or something... Was wondering if anyone has done anything like that...

thanks for searching...

I just paged thru the entire DIY section... nada...
...I suppose another idea might be to look for a 'dividerless' cargo tray?

idea is to squeeze as many cubic inches of storage I can :)

I am in the same boat...

I was thinking use the bottom of the cargo organizer as a template and cut a sheet of MDF to fit.

Paint it black, cover the top side with the black carpet used on speaker boxes and the bottom side with felt or foam to keep it from rattling.

Really need to think it though...

Cargo organizer

I just got a 2012 Soul. 2012s do not come with a spare, so I am using the space where the spare usually goes to store stuff. There is a small air compressor and repair kit already there.

I am planning on making a cover for the area above that out of plywood. That way I will have two compartments out of sight.

??! no spare? what happens if you get a flat?
hopefully if the tyre is not ripped to shreds, you squirt the sealant in, pump it up and you are on your way at a reduced speed.

not a bad idea.

if you cut bottom, then stitched pieces of that carpet together, you might be able to cover that, the well sides and possibly the 'top' (floor of cargo area) so its all one piece...
if the base model dosent have the storage box and i assume still comes with a peice of carpet to cover the spare/sealant/pump.... could you not buy one of these as a starting point for your mods?.

Stitching / sewing is really not in my skill set... heh.

Much better with power tools and stuff... I have been wrenching on Jeeps for the past 10+ years...

Even if I have to put some "feet" on the MDF "floor" to get it to sit level, that would still be easy enough.

I don't want it to look "hack", but at the same time I want to be able to remove it to get at the spare.

Speaking of the spare, I am prolly gonna pull the donut that is in there and pick up a basic steel wheel from the import section of the junkyard and clean it up so I can run a full size spare.

I thought of that. And meant to ask the dealer about it. Never really got to look since all he had on the lot when I bought mine were three Exclaims.

Still need to find a "Base" to look at and see.

ANd I think I need/want something substantial enough to mount my old 8" Bazooka powered sub. Laugh all you want, but it is cost effective since I already have all the wiring...

I saw this as the 'before' pic for an aftermarket cargo organizer.

Looks like I want the spare tire cover from the base model Soul?

Have you tried putting a full-sized wheel/tire in the compartment to see if it will fit ?

I wonder how sturdy that is though...

Not yet. Of course I will do that BEFORE I buy anything...

We have a 2011 Base Model and I wasn't to impressed with the sturdiness of the covering over the cargo floor. For a quick fix I cut up an old weather tech cargo mat from a station wagon I no longer own to fit the rough shape of it and that helps. If I was going to haul heavy stuff like tools and such I would probably take the carpet out and use it for a template to cut a 1/2" or 3/8" plywood. To put down as a new floor of the trunk. You cold cut some fingerholes in it to help in removing it when you needed to.
I made a cardboard template and then cut a piece of plywood for the shelf.

I put two 1 x 2 supports on the bottom of it and painted it with undercoating.

looks good - but now you'll need a trip to the big-box store to find a finger-hole -
looks great! What I want to do is something that drops into wheel cavity, with carpet, etc covering that, the spare wheel well sides, and the floor of the cargo area around it...

Wish I had a driveway or garage to work on it! :-(
