Has anyone had any luck getting kia to replace their engine after a sudden lockup in the Soul??? It is a known problem esp. with the 2015. I have contacted the highway safety people had numerous calls and disputes with the kia resolution center to no avail. Any suggestions or does anyone know a good attorney that likes to handle these issues?

How many miles? What do you mean by lock up? What do you mean by it is a known issue? Kia issued the recalls but that is just an inspection and replacement of knock sensor, but if you had engine damage during the recall because of the knock sensor you could get a new engine if it was bad enough.

The thing I don't get is that people either never check their oil or they ignore rod knock. Engines almost never catastrophic fail with proper lubrication, and knocking is pretty obvious

I work at a dealer and Kia has no issues replacing engines under their very long warranty and even engines with over 200k that were on the recall list (Soul is not one of them except certain 1.6 gdi under SC176) I have also seen many "goodwill" engines get replaced outside of warranty if owners had them regularly serviced at a dealership and can provide good records. I have at the same time seen engines full of sludge or ones showing oil starvation in the top end get denied along with other cars who have not visited dealerships for updates, recalls, service actions etc... So I guess it all depends on the situation but for sure they do not deny engines under warranty or recall, even ones with questionable maintenance that have warranty left.

well I am not one of those people. The engine was using oil so we constantly checked it and added oil. As far as rod knock it was not ignored. The vehicle was immediately stopped when a sound was heard and they still won't cover my engine because the dealer said there was no rod damage. about four thousand dollars later the kia dealership got me back on the road claiming "unknown cause" for my problem. Really four grand in engine work and they list it as unknown cause so Kia got out of covering anything! Can't believe how they can get away with the unknown cause stuff so they don't have to pay. What a racket.

Oh they also said that some engines just use more oil them others. That we were just to keep checking it. And yes look at the major complaint people have about the certain year kia souls and it happens to be SUDDEN engine failure.

So how many miles were on this engine? Are you the original owner or have maintenance records from the original owner?
I work at a dealer and have replaced plenty of the 2.4s that have the recall, they in fact have an issue and Kia has recalled them and they have a million mile warranty when we run the VIS and they warranty them even with over 200k that I have done. I have replaced Soul engines but it is like 1 Soul 1.6 or 2.0 for every 50 of the 2.4s so I would not say the Soul engines have an inherent problem. I see cars every single day that are 10k, 15k since their last oil change and the oil drained is low and looks like gear oil. I also see cars everyday that have the $1.25 oil filter from a quick lube and leaking at the drain plug because the quick lube or indy shop doesn't bother to replace the crush washer and they come in with oil light flickering and less than a quart in the oil pan, this is every single day and if one day I don't see one I will see 3 the next and as a matter of fact this morning I have to retest a car from yesterday that came in just like that and we changed the oil and see if it lives or if it was ruined by the shop that serviced it last, either way that engine has been compromised.
As for the oil burning and usage, it is inherent in all cars from the last 10 to 15 years due to the low tension piston rings used these days to meet EPA mileage standards. There is a link to a great youtube video from a Toyota mechanic explaining why modern Toyota and all other engines burn oil. One way to keep the engines from burning excessive oil is to perform the fuel induction/carbon cleaning treatment which your manual recommends every 15k miles so I hope you were doing that and if you provide the proof that you were I would be surprised if Kia did not help you. If you didn't do those treatments there are top end treatments that you pour into your spark plug holes and leave in overnight to break up the carbon buildup on your rings and I have had great success restoring compression and eliminating the oil burning with these.
I work for a group that owns multiple dealerships from domestic to Japanese and European brands. All cars break, there are some inherent problems and manufacturers address them (just ask our Nissan store how many transmissions they rebuild in a week) but no manufacturer warranties and covers anything longer than Kia, they absolutely have the best warranty and beyond warranty coverage of anyone out there.
I wish you had got a more favorable resolution to your engine issue but I also think that there may have been some underlying causes for your engine problem.

You didn't answer my question above; What has changed in the last 5 months for you to come back to raise this topic again? Or are you just here to complain about Kia? Right now we only have your side of the story so in order for us to believe your side we need to hear honest answers about your car's past ownership & maintenance history. But starting a thread here 5 months after your initial posting of your engine's problem just to air your grievances from back then doesn't really engender any trust on your end. Nor does posting only in the middle of the night, but I'm a night owl myself so I won't hold that against you and only consider it an oddity.
What more do you expect to accomplish with this thread?

Nissan's still having those CVT failures?
I'd thought by now they would've done something about them.

Every CVT fails, Jeep, Nissan, Subaru and now the new Soul and Forte have the recall for their IVT. It is a brilliant and inexpensive way to gain MPG but unfortunately they are not very strong although much improved in recent years.

The issue with the Kia soul is they burn lots and lots of oil. Which causes extra carbon build up. Literally seen several that need to have oil added daily. Eventually causes major rod knock and engine failure. You keep trying to spin it like Kia have good engines. That total bs and you know it. Rarely do Soul engines get to 200k. My Prius had 420k before having major engine issues. Now that a quality engine. No carbon build up. No major oil burning.

Great you get/got higher miles than most...
But...

How Many Miles Does a Car Last?
The Bureau of Transportation indicates that the average age across the board for vehicles still on the road is just over 11 years according to Autotrader, and the average may be approaching 12 years. Standard cars in this day and age are expected to keep running up to 200,000 miles, while cars with electric engines are expected to last for up to 300,000 miles.

Should not be difficult to get replacement,
Depending on other aspects of wear & tear.
Good Luck with that!!...the qualifying words to get the engine replaced, is..."ROD BEARING DAMAGE"...Notice that they say nothing about "Compression Failure" which is caused by their recalled faulty "Catalytic Converters"...go figure.

Hi you guys, we've got a 2018 Kia Soul that was bought from Enterprise. We've been told it's rod bearing damage. The issue we're having is that, they won't replace the engine because they claim an upgrade notification was sent to an address that I've not lived at in over 2 years. Even though our car wasn't purchased through Kia! We should've had our car serviced though Kia and also called Kia and given them our contact information even though Kia had no involvement in the sale or purchase of the car we were told. I have never in my 60 years, when I've decided to change my residence, felt it was necessary to contact anyone but the post office. Up until then the car was great. The sensor went off and we did not drive the car. Because of the sudden knocking sound, we had our car towed to a dealership (per the car alert system) and from that point on we've been made to feel like we're just trying to get something free out of them. We were told the day after Christmas and 20 minutes later a salesman called asking if we would like to view any cars. We go in to discuss the findings on the car and the same salesman finds us (while my wife is in tears!) as I'm talking to the tech and starts in again! I've never in my life felt so mistreated!

I’m not sure how you expect Kia USA to know where you live so they can send recall and product improvement notices to you if you didn’t update your address with them? There’s a change of ownership/address card in the owners manual for this purpose. It can be done online too.

You can try calling Kia USA at 1-800-333-4542 and open a ticket with them and see if they can help. Maybe they’ll be willing to do a good will repair.

I'm trying to decipher your post, I'm having to read between the lines a bunch. So a lot of this is guessing, please correct me if I'm wrong.

1) No mention of how many miles on the car. Kia has a 100k powertrain warranty but it only applies to the original owner. It sounds like you bought your car secondhand (from Enterprise?) If so you didn't get the 100k warranty from Kia.

2) it sounds like someone at the dealership may have mentioned a campaign where if you had brought in your car for a software update you might have qualified for an extended engine warranty... But that's neither here nor there because you didn't bring it in, correct?

3) Car salesmen aren't usually the best and brightest. I wouldn't let an insensitive jerk desperate to make a sale get you down.

4) As rhysoul mentioned, if you call the 800 number there is a chance due to circumstances you might be offered a goodwill repair or help with the repair. I do wish you good luck.
