So how many miles were on this engine? Are you the original owner or have maintenance records from the original owner?
I work at a dealer and have replaced plenty of the 2.4s that have the recall, they in fact have an issue and Kia has recalled them and they have a million mile warranty when we run the VIS and they warranty them even with over 200k that I have done. I have replaced Soul engines but it is like 1 Soul 1.6 or 2.0 for every 50 of the 2.4s so I would not say the Soul engines have an inherent problem. I see cars every single day that are 10k, 15k since their last oil change and the oil drained is low and looks like gear oil. I also see cars everyday that have the $1.25 oil filter from a quick lube and leaking at the drain plug because the quick lube or indy shop doesn't bother to replace the crush washer and they come in with oil light flickering and less than a quart in the oil pan, this is every single day and if one day I don't see one I will see 3 the next and as a matter of fact this morning I have to retest a car from yesterday that came in just like that and we changed the oil and see if it lives or if it was ruined by the shop that serviced it last, either way that engine has been compromised.
As for the oil burning and usage, it is inherent in all cars from the last 10 to 15 years due to the low tension piston rings used these days to meet EPA mileage standards. There is a link to a great youtube video from a Toyota mechanic explaining why modern Toyota and all other engines burn oil. One way to keep the engines from burning excessive oil is to perform the fuel induction/carbon cleaning treatment which your manual recommends every 15k miles so I hope you were doing that and if you provide the proof that you were I would be surprised if Kia did not help you. If you didn't do those treatments there are top end treatments that you pour into your spark plug holes and leave in overnight to break up the carbon buildup on your rings and I have had great success restoring compression and eliminating the oil burning with these.
I work for a group that owns multiple dealerships from domestic to Japanese and European brands. All cars break, there are some inherent problems and manufacturers address them (just ask our Nissan store how many transmissions they rebuild in a week) but no manufacturer warranties and covers anything longer than Kia, they absolutely have the best warranty and beyond warranty coverage of anyone out there.
I wish you had got a more favorable resolution to your engine issue but I also think that there may have been some underlying causes for your engine problem.
