Hey guys, I have a 2011 kia soul ! automatic, 194k miles, it has been a great little car, but yesterday it wouldn't shift out of 1st gear, when it finally did, it slammed into 2nd, and the check engine light came on. p0722 code came up with my scanner. Once it did shift, I was able to use gear 2 and 3 with the manual shift mode, but no 1st or 4th.
I am a seasoned mechanic, and I fix tractors for a living, What am I in for? The only video I've found seems to require removing the valve body from the trans.
TIA.

It's a code for the output speed sensor. Might just want to take a look at the wires and the sensor first.

Is speedo run off this sensor? Because speedo works perfectly
Also, code only comes on after it slams into 2nd gear
It's the output speed sensor on the trans. As a mechanic you understand you have an input side and an output side on the trans and the ratio of the rpm of each one should be somewhere close to if you divide by the gear ratio in each gear so let's say gear X is 2 to 1 than the output speed is half of the input speed and gear Y is 1 to 1 than they should be the same or close to it minus the slip in the converter or clutches the trans sees.
It's a simple hall effect sensor. Hook up your scope on it and see the signal and amplitude and you can figure out if it is working or not.

that's my next plan is to scope the speed sensor readings, I just found a pdf manual so I can get the pinouts of the trans plug. The manual I found through the forum says its for a 2013, but it says the trans is a 6 speed auto, I'm thinking that manual is for a gen 2?
anyone have a linky for a gen 1?
2012 and 2013 used a 6 speed auto.

I’m not sure if this is exactly the same, but the 4th generation Hyundai Elantra (07-10) used the same engine and 4 speed auto as your 2011 Soul (A4CF2) and when I owned my Elantra I used this online manual. I don’t know if it has the info you need, but I still reference it sometimes when looking up stuff on my 2011 Soul. (Because I haven’t been able to find an online manual specifically for 2010-2011 Soul)

Update... got the alldata manual subscription, downloaded all the pages pertaining to the sensors, back probed the plug with my silly scope and I see a clear pulse from the speed sensor. Sensor has good ground and batt power when on. Changed fluid and filter and took it for a quick spin. Same issue. Need to check the harness next from sensor to ecm.

I can manually shift from 1st, to 2nd, then to 3rd using the +/- mode on the lever, but I cannot get into 4th, and once I get into 3rd, trans will not backshift into 2nd on its own, and will not go back into first unless I shut the car off and restart. I'm going g to replace both speed sensors, just for peace of mind.
