Lagging and sputtering

I have a 2015 with the 2.0 engine. It's starts and idles just fine. I can lightly step on the gas and it will eventually make it up to 60. But if I step on the gas even a little too much, there is a few second delay then the car bogs down bad and sputters. If I keep in the gas it will rev high and start knocking. It started doing this shortly after I replaced the spark plugs and coil packs. The first time it did it, there was a misfire code in cylinder 1&4... but after that code was cleared it has not thrown another one, yet still has the problem. Any ideas what it could be??

Does it use oil? If so how much?
Sounds like a stopped up converter.

What kind of spark plugs and coils did you use? Why did you replace them and how did it run before the work?

Yes! It does use a lot of oil!
I changed the spark plugs because the car turned over 100,000 miles. It wasn't having this problem before I changed them. It could be just a coincidence that it happened after I change the spark plugs. I put in autolite iridium xp plugs. I'm not sure if the name of the coils.

I can also hear a ticking noise coming from the high pressure fuel pump. It's not loud, but there is a ticking sound for sure.
I don’t like Autolite spark plugs in Korean engines. They should be NGK. But that’s probably not your problem. If you had no problem beforehand, maybe the aftermarket coils are junk. Wouldn’t be too shocking with the poor quality aftermarket parts these days. Why did you replace the coils? If you still have the originals, put them back on and see if that helps.

Otherwise, it could be the cat. Oil burning will eventually cause the cat to go bad.

The high pressure pump is loud and ticky, that is why there's that big foam piece to deaden the sound around it and the GDI injectors. I would not concern myself with that noise unless it is somehow abnormally loud.

I thought I was supposed to replace the coils when I replaced the plugs??? That's the only reason I replaced them. If it was a plug / coil problem, wouldn't I be having the same problem even at lower speeds and not just when I try to go up a hill or sped up to get on the highway?

Coils don’t need to be replaced unless they’re bad. And sometimes aftermarket ones are worse than the old original.

If you didn’t have a problem before changing the parts, that leads me to think some of the new parts you used might be defective. Putting the old coils back on will verify that.

However the loss of power accelerating could also mean the cat is clogged up. Try putting the old coils back in before investigating further is what I’d try first.

Thanks everyone for the help! I'll let you know how it goes.
When you accelerate you place a higher demand on the engine so the cylinder pressures are higher hence why it takes a good ignition system to ignite the denser mixture. Basically it takes more power, more power requires more air and fuel so more air and fuel is in the cylinder and if your ignition system has any weakness that's when it will show up. Of course there other factors but if it ran fine before the coils and plugs chances are that's where your problem lies. If you used auto parts store coils chances are they're junk and only reason I say that is because I've never got a good coil from an auto parts store. Even their name brands like Denso are often not OEM specs and a cheaper version that they produce for the after market.

Just to make sure I'm not a zombie poster, I took it by a shop today and the cat converter was almost 100% clogged.
You need to get the oil consumption fixed or the converter will be ruined again. :)

Do you live in a state that tests emissions? If no, just put a straight pipe and don’t tell anyone. 🤐

And keep the oil level full, but ideally try to reduce consumption, here’s a link that can help.

Just be aware, if you remove a converter and replace it with a straight pipe and get caught it a humongous fine. Either 10k or 25k fine, can't remember which. That's federal law.

Since you have a 2.0 get one of those cheap aftermarket converters and get it welded in, should be a few hundred bucks total.

sound to me like your catalytic converter is plug

I recently saw and had fixed similar symptoms on my 2014 Soul Base. Ended up being some really cruddy valves. So much crud was caked on. Valves were walnut blasted clean, new spark plugs, new fuel injectors and new manifold seal. Amazing how well the car runs now
