IRVINE, Calif., June 2, 2020– Kia Motors America today announced May sales of 45,817 vehicles. Demand for Kia’s lineup of capable SUVs remained strong as Sportage and Sorento topped the sales chart and the all-new Seltos SUV delivered its best performance since going on sale in January.

“With our expanded lineup of award-winning SUVs leading the way, Kia continues to defy expectations and outperform the industry. In fact, Sportage set a new retail sales record for the month of May,” said Bill Peffer, vice president, sales operations, Kia Motors America. “And with several exciting new products debuting in the months ahead and our dealers implementing touchless shopping and servicing practices, we continue to focus not only on exceeding the needs of our customers but also on their health and well-being.”

IRVINE, Calif., July 1, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America's June sales total of 47,870 vehicles featured retail-only sales within one percent of the June 2019 mark despite a shortage of the award-winning Telluride SUV and other select models. In the month that saw Kia rank number one in the industry in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study, the Sorento SUV led the way while the Sportage SUV delivered its best-ever retail performance in June.

"Despite the pandemic, demand for Kia's world-class offerings such as the Telluride remains extraordinarily high. In fact, on a selling day adjusted basis, Kia's retail sales were up nearly 6-percent year-over-year," said Bill Peffer, vice president, sales operations, Kia Motors America. "Kia has once again topped the industry in initial quality and we are ready to begin the next chapter of our product story with the arrival of the all-new 2021 K5, which has been very well received by the media thus far, and consumers are already reaching out for details on future availability."

Wow. Just wow. I can see the pandemic in the numbers but just barely. My prior belief would have forecast a much sharper 2020 sales contraction.

I wonder how other auto companies are faring and how Kia is faring relative to the pack.

I also wonder if specific socio-economic circumstances are driving sales by model but I don't know the Kia line up and model-specific customers well enough. The pandemic is impacting folks of different socio-economic backgrounds differently.

Here's the JD Powers ranking conwels post references. Good news for Kia.

The 2020 Soul highest ranked small SUV

The most reliable car brands on the American market in 2020
Pasted:
  • With the revamped scoring, Dodge and Kia tied for first place in overall initial quality, with 136 problems per 100 vehicles.
  • Kia is ALWAYS at the top of the rankings – this is the sixth consecutive year that it has been the highest-ranked mass market brand in the study.
The only news/surprise for me is how high Dodge and Chevrolet ranked.

Just in time because NAFTA II will make North American auto manufacture more expensive.

I'm guessing that Nissan might not survive the pandemic. They were already in free-fall last year and this year they're down 50% from 2019. I don't expect the brand to survive. Fiat Chrysler America is also hurting badly and have had their own sales woes for quite a while.

Although they all took hits because of the pandemic, it looks like Hyundai is doing better than most. Still, fleet sales are hurting all of them for obvious reasons.

I found this article if you'd like to compare.

Hmmmmm...that doesn't seem right from what I've researched & read, but there's always been some question in my mind about JD Powers methodology to reach their conclusions. 🤔

Does that mean another round of those annoying Chevy commercials? 🤪

Yup. Could very well be in the cards. Hopefully the company gets bought out by another auto company and some of the better Nissan models are preserved.

Have owned 4 Datsun/Nissan vehicles.

The one 4-door Datsun purchased for C$700.00 in the mid-1980s lasted one year before the uni-body chassis broke. Quebec City winters....

The 1987 Nissan Sentra hatchback/wagon purchased in the early 1990s was great until the passenger side rear shock punched through the uni-body chassis on a rough, deeply rutted, muddy road.

Absolutely loved the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder (WD-21) -- a true truck chassis-based SUV. Went everywhere. Got rid of it because the wife could no longer manage a standard shift due to an issue with her hip.

Currently have a Nissan 2006 Xterra Off-Road with AT that is largely stock but goes everywhere. Should last for another 200,000 km or more. After that we shall see. Maybe by that time Kia will have come out with a truck-like 4X4 SUV?

I wish KIA would get away from the "K" branding. I know they changed the K900 from K9 (as in DOG).

The "K" brings up memories of the K Cars from Chrysler. Cheapy rides.

It's clear Peter Schreyer needs to consult us here at the Kia Soul Forums before making these decisions :D

I wasn't aware until recently that Nissan's problems are much deeper than their quality reputation and their notorious CVTs. (see video) Along with the Detroit big three, Nissan wasn't even on my list when looking for a car last summer. Too bad, 'cause you can get good deals on them. 😕

Yep, that's exactly the memory Kia's "K" branding dislodges from deep within my feeble brain—crappy, boxey cars that came in boring colors and started rusting once it left the lot. 🤭😆

@Kerig3: Prior to buying the Soul, we looked at Nissan sub-compacts. I did not like any of them for a bunch of reasons including lack of space for my 196 cm frame. Which is odd, given that I used to fit well in small Datsun/Nissan vehicles.

The CVTs struck me at the time as weird and I vaguely recall some bad press. Glad I passed on them.
