Just saw an article from Consumer reports on a new $30,000 Soul look alike with crappy power and of course 4WD...$30,000 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross. With tax etc on our 2020 Soul S in Mars Orange...we paid HALF THAT after trading in a 2004 Pontiac Vibe with 135,000 miles...and a questionable transmission! We love our Soul S.

It starts around $23,000, and the Soul is about $20,000 now for 2022 so that’s about right for a Toyota. The Soul Turbo is close to $30,000 which, in my opinion, is more than it’s worth.

The Corolla Cross is a little smaller than the Rav-4 and a bit larger than the ugly C-HR. The 2.0L it comes with has about 20 more horsepower than the 2.0L Soul so they’re pretty much the same for power. AWD is optional. I think it’s more comparable with the Seltos and Kona than it is with the Soul.

I think it looks pretty good and I bet it’s going to sell like hotcakes.

My point was this...when the dust settles from "chip" hell...Toyota prices will still be up there...and Kia will inevitability drop...which makes the Soul a much better purchase...also, did you see the comment about the power band in the Toyota Cross - more horses don't help? Get your Flintstone snickers on...you're gonna need them. Merging into Friday afternoon traffic..I will take the Soul S...every single time. Our Soul (and for that matter my 16 Optima EX) think they are both sports cars. Oh...and that lively little Easter egg in "S" manual shifting...8 speeds! Toyota will always sell because people don't know the real value of Kia...oh, and speaking of value: Toyota warranty...

  • 5-year / 60,000-mile Powertrain
Like you said...they will sell...and Toyotas breakdown just like any other vehicle. So when that tranny drops at 88,000 and 6 years of pushing that car to get into traffic on that Corolla Cross...then Kia really starts to shine.

Kia/Hyundai - warranty depends if you are the original owner or second-hand buyer. I never bought a new car, so on my Hyundai and my Kia I had only the 60k miles / 5 yr warranties. That, at the time of me buying, meant more like 30k miles (Hyundai) or 1000 miles (Soul) or 3 years (Hyundai) or 3 months (Soul) 😀

I agree that the new Corolla Cross will probably sell very well. cwaynes point that the Soul is a better bang for the buck is probably true, but as most of us have either seen friends or relatives rely heavily on brand names & reputations, even if they're somewhat outdated, to determine their car purchase.

There is no debating that the name "Toyota" and "Corolla" have brand presence backed by decades of reliability. THAT is worth alot in the marketplace and why they will be rewarded.

Kia is gaining on them, even placing above Toyota in reliability in this years JD Powers Survey.

No doubt. I have had 2 or 3 Corollas, best I recall. They were good cars but not so memorable.
OTOH I had more than 1 car that was memorable but not in a good way.
Reliable but non exciting has it's place.
This does not mean they are mutually exclusive.
