Hey gang... Hope everyone is surviving the heat and floods we are experiencing this week!!

Yesterday, I filled my tank, rounding off to even monies, (a few cents) and took off doing my errands. Since I filled the tank I have smelled a strong gas odor twice. Quick look see offered no clues. It was hard to pinpoint exactly where it was strongest as I smelled it all around the car. Now I know its been hot here in S NV, but I cant see the gas expanding that much. Any ideas? Anyone else experience a fuel smell?

Wow that's HOT Protech. 122 degrees. We'll never see that in the NW.

I wouldn't worry about the gas smell. When you squeezed that little extra in to make even change it probably expanded into the over flow cannister. I would advise underfilling in those extreme temps. If enough gas gets in the cannister you'll throw a code & some other misery starts.

Man keep cool down there & take care.

I'd be curious how you rate the Souls A/C ability in triple digit temps?

Great pic too!

Simple solution, when filling up, the moment the pump stops by itself, don't try to put more gas and you won't have that gas smell ever again.

Follow up to my original post. Well I was at the dealer having the car serviced yesterday, there were two other people with my same issue. I will write it off to excessive heat, after all it's been averaging 115 to 117 here lately.

Thanks for the reply Geo. As long as I keep the car in the shade when I'm not driving it, the A/C does a good job for the front seat passengers. People in the back seat... not so much.

Weatherman said tonight that by Monday (or so) we should be back down to normal temps... 110ish

Ok, I have a gas smell follow up... My gas warning light came on this afternoon, so I put $20 in the tank... well in gas not the money :rapture: .... Had 3/4 tank..... far from a full tank.

I did my errands in Vegas.... Came home, mainly freeway driving. When I pulled into the driveway I smelled a very strong gas odor. Temperature was only about 109 F today...

The issue can't be an over filling issue for me at this point. Has to be purge or canister related.

I hope Kia makes note of this problem. If someone parks their car in a garage or poorly ventilated area, there could be problems.

For us Americans, happy 4th and I wish everyone a safe weekend.

Hey Protech I was wondering if the gas smell seems concentrated around the back seat area. Access to the gas tank & fuel pump is right under the cushion. I'm wondering if a seal or gasket could be compromised?

Does this tend to happen right after visiting the gas pump only?

Happy Independence day to all!

There are no inside odors at all. I notice the smell as I am getting out of the car after driving it. Doesn't happen all the time.

The last time I put gas in it, I purposely did not fill it up. Cap is always securely closed, there are no leaks.

I drove it today was not a problem, but it was only 105 F today.

Is cap turned just 1 click Pro?

That is correct GS, one click tighten and spring loaded return when removing. I might add the smell does appear to be coming from the gas cap area, I haven't inspected that closely yet. I pump my own gas so I know its put on correctly each time. I wonder if it's so hot the tank builds up too much pressure and the cap vents it off.

That sure sounds like a plausible explanation. Especially since you don't see gas leaking anywhere & no odor inside the cabin.

Do you notice it after first trip after full fill up? If the venting of the cap is due to the gas vapor pressure above the liquid gas in the tank then you may notice the odor more the less full the tank is. I wonder if Kia has any gas caps that vent at higher pressures for Souls residing in hot climates.

Maybe it is a sign that humans weren't meant to live at extreme temperatures. Vegas temperatures can be brutal--I remember walking to and from the Convention center worrying that the soles of my runnnng shoes were going to melt!
