"fixing" an engine failure

2794 Views 68 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  MonsterSoul
2016 soul 1.6 gdi ,engine has 105,000 on the clock and fried a piston ,currently waiting on dealership to see if it qualifies for replacement ,...car was never run low on oil ,followed the maintenance schedule religiously ,it had all recalls done ,it was eating oil like a 2stroke but was running on all 4 up in till sudden death
....,troubleshot it myself before taking it to dealer ......code po303 ,constant misfire ,has spark ,has fuel ,changed plug ,checked compression (45psi on 3) ,no vacuum ,huge amount of blow-by ,....scoped cylinder ,...piston is there ,wall looks scored ,no holes ,didn't see anything catastrophic and rod bearings may be ok ....

this my mothers car ,if the factory doesn't fix it ,then "i'm" going to have to fix it ,as she's a senoir and can't afford to take it as a loss
.....i'm not an expert ,but not a novice ,came here to look for resources for parts ,repairs and options ,to ask about availability of replacement parts ,upgraded parts ,replacement short blocks ,ect ....are there any retailers that sell sleeves and/or pistons in repair clearance spec (slightly larger in order rebore block) and can you re-hone ,re-bore or fix a cylinder bore or these particular engines

any links ,resources and advice would be greatly appreciated and may prove really helpful to others who may stumble onto the threat ,....i had a hard time finding anything on resources and options ,i think this engine might be repairable but won't know intill i tear it down ,looking to get a head start on the where ,who and hows ......

edit* just saw i posted on wrong gen topic ,will repost in gen 2 but the thread may still apply to gen 1 owners

i found a link on engine knocking https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking ,a rod bearing knock is a bit different then a detonation knock ,but i was thinking a knock sensor is usually to help the ecu adjust timing for a more controlled combustion chamber burn ,.......in hot rods and higher performance engines ,when most folks refer to knocking ,they refer to combustion chamber knocking ,which can actually destroy rod and crank bearings if not addressed ,was thinking detonation and timing control was the purpose of the knock sensor in these motors and why the rod bearings were under extended warranty ,i would think they would cover the whole crank ,rod and piston assembly though ,.....was why i was curios about it
They replace the engine if the rod bearings fail under that KSDS warranty, they’re not just putting in new rod bearings. They made the knock sensor more sensitive or something to detect unusual knocking and the software update puts the engine in limp home mode to save itself from total destruction.

.......uh , ....i cant help but wonder ,why do the bearings fail
In my opinion it’s from not checking or changing the oil enough and running it dry. However, I don’t think negligence is covered under the warranty
is that correct
That’s my understanding of this update, yes.
piston melted on the edge
Do you know what caused the piston to melt?

How bad did the intake valve deposits look on this higher mileage 1.6L? Just curious.
this was what i found when i did a web search ,was kinda skeptical of kiapartsnow as there's a dozen sites under the powered website company and wasn't sure if the stuff they had was from kia or from another retailer and available through those websites
All these online OEM Kia parts websites are actual dealerships. I like www.kia.parts they’re out of AZ, also www.mykiaparts.com which is a dealer called “premier kia” out of CT, and even closer to me is www.tascaparts.com and that’s a dealership group out of RI.

Yes they all use the same software. Just like all these car forums use the same XenForo software.

naa ,they tried to get my mother to agree with the extra 300$ charge ,on top of the standard 1 hour 160$ charge ,...they called her first thing this morning ,didn't ask for me ,then acted sorta hostile when my mother referred them to me and i questioned him about it ,.....i tried to call him back after initial conversation ,was going to authorize it ,but had to recalculate my budget to make sure i could pay it if claim gets denied......they turned down my phone calls and simply would not take my call the rest of the day
Have the car towed to a different kia dealer.

Kia now has something in play called "Product Improvement Campaign (PI1803)" whereas they replace the engine at no cost to the owner of the vehicle. Please check into it. Kia and Hyundai also have an 8 million car recall for issues with engines. Also a class action suit is going on. Cheap product, using cheap materials and probably cheap labor. Get ahold of your states Attorney Generals' Office to either file a complaint or get in touch with the lawyers who are handling the law-suits. Souds like you have earned a break in this mess. So sorry you have to deal with it, it is certainly NOT good customer skills. I did a lot of research because I have a key-start Soul (2015) that all of a sudden I could not get isurance for. I was shocked and had never heard of such a thing. But it's out there; the key starts on some models make them easy to steal, and Kia didn't have any kind of kill-switch or anti-theft-device. And since I don't want to pay for a car I can't drive, I felt for me the only solution was a voluntary repo. Not for everyone I know, but I'm not in the position where I think paying for a vehicle I cannot insure so cannot drive is stupid. Good Luck to you sir.
You keep repeating the same misinformation. It’s getting really annoying now.

PI1803 is for the Theta II 2.4L GDI and 2.0L turbo GDI engine. The Soul does NOT use that engine.

A simple google search would tell you this.

It isn't what you did or didn't do sir; it's a cheap car made with cheap materials and probably cheap labor. Please check into a program they now have called Product Improvement Campaign (PI 1803) to help with just this type of issue. Again, it isn't you, but they do their darndest to get you to think it's your fault. I'm 77 yrs old and they also tried that baloney. Nope, not with this old woman. So I walked away from the brand and the vehicle, plus any vehicle made by Kia or Hyundai. Good Luck to you sir.

I’m glad the engine is being replaced under warranty. Of course the dealer wants to sell you a new car, that’s up to you if you want to but I would probably keep the 2016 with the new motor. Are they going to give you a loaner car?

A diagnostic charge is cheaper than a new car.

I don’t know what a used 2016 base go for right now. Outrageous prices on used cars right now. They’ll probably list it at some absurd amount like $15k. They won’t give your that much on trade though.

A new Soul LX is at least $20k and then add taxes and fees and dealer junk fees like market adjustment, and doc fees, and other things they try to sneak in. Plus you still owe money on the 2016.

Ask for a loaner.

This may sound insensitive, but for an older driver like your mom, I’d feel more comfortable with her occasionally bumping up an older soul than a brand new one. Also if there are sensors in the bumpers they get really expensive to fix. Plus all the other driving nannies and tech may be a bit much to learn. My father is your mothers age and he can barely operate his iPhone. If he got a new car with touch screens and all this other tech, it will be a nightmare for me to try to teach him 😂
