dealer develops home brew fix for tiktok inspired hyundai and kia thieves

Owners of older Hyundai and Kia models have had a rough go over the last few months. A TikTok video made them the targets of thefts and break-ins after it was discovered that the vehicles didn’t have electronic immobilizers. Some have sued, some are resorting to old-school measures like “The Club,” and others are looking to dealers for help. A dealer service director in St. Louis came up with an answer.

Elliot Silk from Suntrup Automotive Group said he had dozens of Hyundais and Kias in the service lot, waiting for repairs from damage caused by break-ins. He and a service tech took matters into their own hands with an in-house-developed Bluetooth immobilizer. After three months of work, Silk said his device prevents the engine from being started until the driver has pressed a button on a key fob.

Silk thinks the device will stop everyday thieves from nabbing a car with one of his devices. He’s also confident the installation will prevent the removal of the device, as the vehicle would need some rewiring work done afterward.

The immobilizer is available for $200 installed at Silk’s dealership, and he’s also offering it online for $99 plus shipping. Hyundai and Kia told Automotive News they haven’t studied the device but say they “continue to review and evaluate options. Both automakers state that their 2022 and newer models come with immobilizers, but that’s little consolation to the millions of owners without. There may be an official solution in the future, but this is a solid alternative for now. Dealer Develops Home-Brew Fix for TikTok-Inspired Hyundai and Kia Thieves

Anyone have a link to where you can actually buy the $99 immobilizer?

Thanks billy. I still can't find mention of the product on their websites. But then again, it could be right in front of me and I don't see it 👀

It was linked in the “automotive news” article that’s behind a paywall. This is it.

It doesn’t look like many wires to connect. I wonder what ones you have to tap into?

Thanks Rhys! I'd love to see their self install video to see if DIY isn't too complicated.

Hey Everyone, My name is Brandon Rea with visdevices. I wanted to clarify a couple things real quick. The system that kia/hyundai tried to come up with was more like an alarm system and they have having alot of issues. Our system is 3 wires but does take some mechanical skills to install because it stops the current between the battery and the starter (not allowing the starter to engage). When you buy the device it comes with a QR code with 2 videos showing the installation process from a certified technician. It also comes with 2 key fobs. visdevices.com ( we are experiencing some issues if you are trying to order through paypal) we received a mass order and has taken us a while to get everything together! Please let me know if you have any other questions!

The first thing a thief looks at in a Kia/Hyundia is to see if it has a key ignition. So now he breaks the door glass to get in, and the steering wheel housing and rips out the lock. Only to find out it will not start so you're stuck with $2,000 in damages but luckily, it's not stolen thank God! $50 push button starter kit seems to be a much better way to go! Big city has nothing to do with it. I live in a small town surrounded by small communities. Stealing and dope fights murder happens here too. Judges are the ones that need to heid accountable. Until they start doing what's right its going to continue. Anytime I'm out I keep my head on a swivel. And our small town police are worthless. The county police is constantly in the news for crime busts. I have emailed our local chief of police and mayor with concerns. Never heard back from either one.

1% was just a PFA / Pulled From Air (or somewhere darker lol) number for an example.
Bedford looks like a nice place from a quick search. You never knows what lurks.

According to the local Sheriffs office my area does not have a large population.
But I guess we are diverse due to having Cattle, and Forests, and Tourists, oh my.
