I brought 2014 kia soul, with 57k miles, for oil an change and tire rotation and i feel like im being scammed. I got a txt saying the following things needed to be addressed immediately:
1) fuel induction service: 199.99$
2) brake flush: 149.95$
3) spark plug replacement: 304.11$

fair condition suggested:
1) cabin air filter: 89.95$
2) engine air filter: 69.95$

What do you all think? The repair rep at the dealership says he does not see my FUEL INDUCTION ever being done and its a priority it gets done.

When i asked him for a copy of the maintenance schedule he was referring to as it was his only copy. Lol really.

also anyone know if i do my own spark plug change with approved kia spark plugs and have receipt of the parts that this will not screw up my warranty on the car? Such a ridiculous easy job, why so exp?

thanks in advance

“Just say no”

Just have what you brought it in for done.

Cabin and engine air filter you can easily do yourself for $25 and plugs are simple and shouldn’t be more than $50 for the plugs.

Fuel induction service is something some people like to do because of our dirty GDI engines, but to be honest it’s probably more of a waste of money.

Brake flush might not be a bad idea given the age of the car, but an independent shop can probably do it for less.

Doing your own maintenance won’t void any warranty. Just save the receipts.

ok thanks, i saw this and thought someone needed to pay boat money bills. I reading some of the brakes need to be kept full during flushing or else air gets inside the system and cause abs issues. But this makes me feel so much better I said no. I've actually went to their website there is no maintenance schedule listed on their site and the txt chat lady wanted me to make an appointment to have my car seen. Almost any other kia dealership has the maintenance schedules listed, so it makes me wonder if I should drive further to find a more honest dealership?

This is at a dealership? Sounds like a fly by night scam artist special to me.

Reason number 196 why I would rather do my own maintenance whenever possible.

Me: bought 2013 Kia Soul 1.6 base model manual in October of 2012 (10 years ago). Drove it 194k miles since then (it had 1 mile on it when I bought it).

Brake flushes: 0
Fuel services: 0
Spark plugs: 1 change out by me at about 115k miles
Cabin air filter: 2, knocked the dust and leaves out the other times
Air filter change: 2, knocked the dust and leaves out the other times
Times this car has broken down or been back to dealer for repair: 0

I could repeat this same mantra for my 2012 1.6 base that I also bought new in 2012 that my wife drives, but everything would be halved since it only has 85k miles on it. And I haven't changed spark plugs on it yet.

You’re right. When a brake flush is done properly, they make sure the reservoir stays full so no air gets into the system.

Your owners manual will have the maintenance schedule for both normal and severe maintenance service. Or you can look at it online at the Kia website. Should be under section 8 in the owners manual.

Brake flush is not because of air but because brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Lots of manufacturers recommend doing it every 2 years, I'm a mechanic and I do mine around the 5 year mark when I do the coolant as that gets acidic over time as well and needs to be flushed out and replaced. Fuel induction service on a GDI engine is not in the manual, it is just a darn good idea. I know I have posted pictures of what the valves start looking like on GDI engines after not even all that many miles. There are other manufacturers who have processes for removing the intake and walnut blasting the carboned up valves on their GDI engines but Kia does not have a factory procedure for that nor are Kias as affected by it as some other cars. It is still highly recommended to run some type of valve/intake cleaner on any GDI engine to keep the carbon to a minimum. If you do a search there are many people on here who use CRC or other cleaners and they describe their at home methods for doing so. Your dealer likely uses BG or another commercial grade cleaner for the fuel induction and they do a pretty good job of cleaning the valves up. If you want pictures of what a carboned up valve looks like when it gets a hot spot on it and burns up I can dig through my photos and post it up for you.

I just can’t imagine how well some chemicals going through the intake for a few minutes is going to clean years worth of carbon off the intake valves. It doesn’t seem H/K intake valves get as bad as some other manufacturers, so it doesn’t seem worth it to me. Just take the intake manifold off and manually have at it. Sorry, I don’t mean to disagree with you. But on my car, I’m not going to do this service.

You're right that a few minutes would not do the trick. The BG runs through it for about 25 minutes to a half hour. Judging by the smoke cloud that it produces that will get rid of mosquitoes in a 2 block radius it is getting carbon out. I'm sure the little CRC method guys use at home helps but I doubt it can be compared to a professional service. Never read that anyone was scared of all the smoke and carbon that blew out the back, what comes out with BG would freak out most people and will set several codes.

Yes thanks almost 90% of all kids dealerships had the maintenance schedule for all kias on thier websites. This on in st Augustine did not. Even the sms might txt support person could not tell a straight answer. I'll be going to Jacksonville dealer next time around.

so what is BG? Sorry not familiar with that brand. Ill be going to autozone today to get some things to do most of this except the brake flush done myself. My last car was a Hyundai that never gave me any issues. Till someone decided stealing it and driving it through the desert in las vegas was a neato way to treat a street vehicle. lol

I once had sudden brake line failure (in an F-150) so I'm a proponent of having brake fluid flushed periodically. Fortunately the line burst while I was backing out of a home garage and not while I was driving out on the roadways. No one had ever told me about brake fluid going bad, the dealer never said anything the few times I took my truck in, nor anyone else. I bought the truck new and the line burst at about 9 years.

If the dealer you took it too - or another dealer since this one has some sketchy upsell tactics - truly intend to do a full flush, not just empty and refill the reservoir, then that price seems reasonable to me.

On my Kia Soul I did my own brake fluid flush a few years ago - I had never done this sort of maintenance task before.

I wanted to be able to do it by myself (ie without a helper pumping the brake pedal etc) and so chose to go with a pressure bleeder which allowed for one-person operation.

The pressure bleeder along with various additional tools (eg bleeder wrenches) I didn't already have, accessories to modify the pressure bleeder, and brake fluid, probably was close to $100. Plus there is the post-time involved to appropriately dispose of the used brake fluid as not all oil recyclers around me (I change my own oil) accept used brake fluid.

Regarding the induction cleaning, seems like a decent price if they are doing the process that user bwdz75 has described in various posts.

I doubt I'll go the at-home CRC route. Having watched some videos the results seem a little iffy to me. I would want some way to easily view the tops of the valves before and after to personally see any difference.

On the other hand I'm not real keen on going to my local dealer because the service dept person didn't know what - induction cleaning??? - I was asking about, had to ask around, and wanted to call me back. The person I spoke with later gave me a price but it still wasn't clear to me that he and I were talking the same thing nor what the induction cleaning process entailed. Didn't exactly give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

All do it your self tasks. Plugs should be good for almost 100K miles, Air and Cabin are around $15 each and less than ten minutes of effort.

yeah, the shop was upselling you for suggested routine service interval work. The cabin air filter you can do in a heartbeat, Engine air filter go get a K and N filter and tell them to pound sand as you wash it, spray some oil on it and reinstall it. 5 minutes work on your part. Plugs should be good to 85,000 miles as they are iridium plugs, brake flush is a shop money maker and usually causes other problems down the way, A 20 dollar bottle of quality fuel injection system cleaner poured in the tank usually does a great job. PS I do however recommend adding a bottle of Chevron fuel system additive every 4th tank as this helps control issues we used to replace fuel filters for, crappy fuel conditions at pumps. Hope this helps and yes I know, . 45 years a mechanic. But an honest one the whole time. I got my money from repeat appreciative customers who trusted me to do them right!

rhysoul nailed it on his suggestions. If a dealer ever tells you that you need to replace with only Kia parts to keep warranty valid, according to Federal law The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void a warranty or deny coverage under the warranty because an aftermarket or recycled part was used. If they do tell you this, they are required by law to give you said part for free.
Regarding brake flush, buy a cheap turkey baster syringe. This works for power steering fluid as well. Put open end of baster in reservoir and pump bulb end of baster to extract fluid (brake or p/s fluid) until no more fluid in reservoir. Fill to line with fresh new brake or p/s fluid. You won't get any of the old fluid out of lines to brakes and p/s pump but removes much of the dirt in the system. Less contaminated. Good luck!

A similar incident happened when i went to a Kia Dealer by my House on Longisland in NY. As stated most of the issues can be fixed by yourself and is easy.

As stated all the maintenance on a Kia Soul is simple and most are on youtube.

1. The engine filter and cabin filter are easy. And both are $10 or around there at walmart.

2. For fuel system i recommend BG 44k. Sold on amazon or Ebay. Add it to your gas and follow the directions and your good.

3. For carbon cleaning i say to use CRC gdi intake valve cleaner. GDI engines build up carbon and you will def extend the life if your engine doing this.

4. Spark plugs i suggest Ruthenium NGK ..best prices i would say Rock Auto. Also ignition coils. For a newbe a spark plug job is easy and took no time.

For the most part do the work yourself or if you dont feel comfortable with certain work your cars needs.....then buy the part and get a good mechanic to install it. Most dealers now want to rape the consumer and they only want to jack up prices so you either pay or get frustrated and leave.

You definitely got scam. Where did you take it? Also, this is something you could have done yourself. Spark plugs they already come calibrated all you have to do take the old ones out and put the new ones in. Spark plug wire easy to remove. Oil and filter easy to change. Go to your nearest Dollar General buy a plastic tray and get a clean rag a wrench I believe 11/16 but metric and do the change yourself. May be a little messy but to save money it's worth it. If you live in a State that winter is around, you and cold talk to a friend give him a $20. to use his indoor garage. Man, it beats paying all that money you paid.

Some people think that you have to buy the brand of the car parts. Thats Bull, you can buy everything Tru your parts store. I live in South Carolina and have a 2013 Kia Soul Plus; I buy my parts from Ebay all the time. Oil and filter from auto zone. Since I go there every 3 months to get my oil, I get whole price. I purchased my Kia with 35,000 mile I now have 126,000 miles. Not bad since 2 people use the little car. Good luck for the next time.

One question did you get to see your old parts and did you get a receipt?

Yes. Excellent idea.

As the OP does not perform their own service, it is likely an excellent idea to pay the dealership to perform a fuel induction service.
