Is this for real or is my Kia dealer pulling a fast one?
I leased a brand new Kia Soul in 2016. As a retired Senior, I don't drive that much and so far have put less than 5,000 miles on it in two years. I've gone beyond the required maintenance and have had the oil changed, fluids and tires checked etc. every 6 months regardless of the mileage.
A couple of months ago with only 4,000 miles on the car, I took it into the Kia dealer for my annual State Safety Inspection. They called me into the garage with the car on the lift and showed me a big bulge on the inside of a front tire. I was told that they would have to give me a rejection sticker if they didn't replace the tire.
To make a long story short, I about had a stroke when they told me that the tires were not covered by warranty (I was told at the time of the lease that there was a bumper-to-bumper warranty). They tried to sell me at tire that I couldn't afford so I went to a tire outlet, had one put on for 1/3 of the price, and got my inspection sticker elsewhere.
How can this be right??! Even the cheap tire I bought at the discount tire place came with a warranty against manufacture defects! And the tire having a bulge on the inside could not have been anything but a manufacture defect. And yet Kia told me it was not covered by warranty!
I was really stupid (or naive) I guess, and let the discount tire store keep the tire with the defect (they said they needed the trade-in for my price). Because the more I thought about it the madder I got and I would have escalated this. But I guess there was not much I could do without the defective tire in my possession. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
I still find it hard to believe that a brand new car with 4K miles would not have the tires warrantied. It's too bad because I love my Kia Soul and had planned on buying it at the end of my lease. But this has left a bitter taste in my mouth so now I don't know.
