wow if this feature list is legit and the price for the different trims stay relatively the same, then Kia is really bring on the premium features to the Soul at bargain prices. But I suspect the price will probably go up, 2014 plus without optional features will probably be closer to $20K MSPR (similar to 2013 plus with UVO package).

What is the "FlexSteer driver-selectable steering assistance"
its on some of the Hyundai products and coming out on the new Kia products - on the new 2014 Rondo and the Forte sedan in the EX model. You can select from three settings how you want the steering to feel - normal, sport, and comfort.

What's under the skin on the 2014 Soul:

  • 2.4” wider opening of the lift gate
  • will be available in 7 new exterior hues including the two at NY Solar yellow and Inferno Red
  • ideas taken from the Track'ster – large trapezoidal lower air intake and fog light location and the and the “floating” body color panel inset into the lift gate and also lifting as many of the Track'ster's circular interior reference points as possible
  • liberal use of expansion foam thoroughly fills body cavities, reducing outside wind and road noise
  • reinforced isolation pad in the cargo area and poly-urethane-layered carpet helps reduce overall interior noise levels by approximately 3 decibels.
  • Built on a all-new chassis that is nearly 29% stiffer than before
  • strengthening the body at key connection points along the cowl, upper and lower B-pillars, cross members and at the C-pillars
  • fully 66% of the chassis utilizes either Ultra High Strength Steel (35%) or high strength Steel (31%)
  • A-pillar is 0.8” narrower for improved outward visibility
  • application of structural adhesive around the door openings and along the roof also helps improve torsional rigidity
  • heavily revised front and rear suspension, the front sub-frame utilizes four bushings to reduce ride harshness and impact booms over rough pavement
  • the stabilizer bar has been moved rearward on the McPherson strut front suspension, while the steering box has been moved forward, lending better balance and subsequently improved handling and benefits to on-center feel
  • one-piece steering gear housing is stronger (current two piece), improving steering response and reducing impacts felt through the wheel
  • optional Flex Steer, allow the driver to select 3 distinct steering settings – comfort, normal and Sport
  • shocks on the rear torsion bar suspension have been turned vertically and lengthened allowing for more suspension travel and improving ride comfort
  • 2.0L NU power plant is updated with GDI technology
  • both engines have been tuned to provide more low-end torque (9% more torque at 1500 rpm on the 2.0L and 5% more on the 1.6L)

GDI on both engines... :( And apparently, it offers no benefit to the 2.0L as the HP and torque are pretty much identical to the MPI version.

The new UVO is supposed to be pretty nice. The expansion foam is interesting. I wonder how much more solid sounding it is.

Well-known for the close link between its concept vehicles and production models, Kia Motors took no chances with the 2014 Soul. When the wild Track’ster concept made its debut in 2012, Soul enthusiasts and pundits alike urged Kia to turn fantasy into reality. With 18 months from design freeze to production, the stage was set for the all new Soul and many of the concept’s dramatic design cues can be found in the production vehicle.

Exterior Track’ster similarities are easy to spot. The large trapezoidal lower air intake is nearly a direct carryover of the concept, and the location of the available fog lights – down low and pushed to the leading edges – mirror those found on the Track’ster. Kia’s signature grille is present, but it’s been reworked to more closely resemble the concept. Adding a touch of flare, the unique “floating” body color panel inset into the lift gate has its roots based in the Track’ster as well.

Citing the current Soul interior as a starting point, Kia’s designers played up the circular theme found inside Track’ster. “With the previous Soul, we kind of dipped our toe in the water when it came to incorporating the circular patterns,” noted Kearns. “But for the all-new Soul, we really wanted to lift as many of the Track’ster’s circular interior reference points as possible.”

^^ What else is strange .... The Same GDI 2.0 engine in the 2014 forte is rated at 173 hp and 154 ftlbs of torque .... Which is what I expected the Soul to have .

Maybe they detuned it somehow for fuel economy . :think

Maybe this is closer to TRUE hp vs. H/K inflated figures. Like the MPG.

Wonder if they improved the Cd from .42. I hope so.
And a bigger fuel tank is much appreciated!
Ditto apparent attempts to improve the ride, which is a bit harsh as is.

yes, its puzzling but they also use the same engine in the new Rondo and on that model its has 164 hp @ 6500 and torque at 156 @ 4700. That new model is now 300 lbs lighter than the previous one that had the 2.4L as standard (that's what I had in my Rondo).

Euhh, I beg to defer here. Peak torque is now reached at 4000rpm (2.0L) and that... is hot! Road test could confirm a much much quieter ride. So for those looking for a higher end quiet driving experience (as opposed to listening to the music of the engine), this is a major improvement (which may explain that MPG didn't improve).

On a 6 cylinder engine (like my previous car the Nissan Maxima), 4000rpm remains high rpm. But on a medium sized 4 cylinder engine, it means that the best that your engine has to offer is now available in easy to reach rpm (4000rpm isn't much). One should easily feel the kick when for instance getting on the highway, passing etc...

Unless you really push it to its limit, the 151 ftlbs of torque produced at 4000rpm on the Soul will make this car feel just as lively as the 154 ftlbs of torque in the Forte. More over, if this 154 is produced at much higher rpm (which I doubt), then the Soul may even feel faster (in spite of being almost 10 hp less powerful).

What is with the fascination of huge tires these days? An economy base vehicle with 16" wheels? The big tire craze has got to go. I'm glad I have my 13 with 15" wheels.
