Thank you for the follow-up post.
VERY glad for yor outcome.
Page 4, item 10 was a concern
That was my concern too, but my argument was that it's a result of an issue beyond my control, as well as showing adequate maintenance records going back to purchase date.

Happy holidays indeed!

I have an update on my soul. After a little back and forth, and being a lucky one who saves service records (like oil changes)(they seriously asked for every oil change service record since I took ownership of the vehicle, and I happily provided them), my extended warranty is going to cover a replacement short block. Total cost to me is $180. I don't normally get an extended warranty, but in this case, I am glad someone, somehow, had me get one.

I agree with what we've all discussed here in regards to our souls oil needs and have put a plan in place for the possibility of future issues. I thank you all for help in my journey.
Congrats Mike, that is great news. Good on you for being persistent & keeping detailed records.

Now for $180 you pretty much get a new Soul. Nice!

That's amazing news Mike! ?

Like you I also keep detailed records of my car's history and in the past they've served me well. I learned the importance of record-keeping a bit later in life than I should have with a first-year Dodge Neon that consistently developed mechanical problems almost immediately. (a very regretful purchase) But later in life record-keeping served me extremely well regarding personal health issues as I was bounced between 13 doctors and specialists conducting hundreds of tests working towards a diagnosis. In both situations I learned the universal importance of "being your own advocate"–no one is going to do it for you so you must take that roll upon yourself.

Have a very Happy New Year and enjoy it now that the worst part of this burden has been lifted from your shoulders! ?

Back in California now. over 3,000 miles since my last oil change. Did 500+ miles around town before the trip - no oil consumption. Went thru 1/2 qt on the trip out here. I still think pushing the car thru the mountains with the constant down-shifting causes the car to use a bit of oil.

I'll switch to 5W-30 for the trip back and see if it makes a difference.

Good
Timeframe?
Same brand of synthetic?
We stay out here thru April. I change every 5,000 and we have about 1,800 miles left. So that should take me into April.

As for brand I'm not sure. I have my oil changed either at Fox Kia in Grand Rapids, MI or, when here, at Palm Springs Kia. I think Fox Kia uses Mobile 1 - at least the sticker on windscreen says Mobile. Not sure what they use here. I'll ask both and match if I can and report back in the spring.

Most of my 4 wheel vehicles used Quakerstate.

Most of my 2 wheeled vehicles used Castrol, except 10W60 Motoul in Moto Guzzi and H-D 360 in both Sportsters. So, I am not promoting any particular brand.
My 1971 Chevelle used Quakerstate until I sold it in 1977 to a friend who liked Castrol and switched. It then started using oil. Friend sold it to a mutual friend who switched back to Castrol and it stopped using oil. Figure that out?!

BTW my local Kia dealership uses Total Quartz 9000 for 5W30 sourced from France.
I was really irritated when at the second oil change, they not only switched back to 5W20, but their 5W20 synthetic is a different brand that their 5W30 synthetic...If the dealer cannot be trusted with an oil change....and since I do not really need a second vehicle, I sold the Soul to CarMax. It was fun for ~8,000 miles.

It has been difficult* using my Ipad on this forum, since the format changes...and I doubt that I have much more to contribute, so if I am no longer posting, please PM me in April.

You're wrong to assume never. We could argue about intervals all day long, and good for you if you're that religious checking fluids. The point is, you shouldn't need to check you oil regularly (say every fill-up)

The point I'm seeing in this thread is, you do need to check your oil regularly!

I'm a little late reporting back, but I had the oil changed in Palm Springs with 10W-30 synthetic (sorry, forgot to ask what brand they use) before we came home. I put a few hundred miles out there, but I checked the oil when it was first changed and right before we left for Michigan and it was full. I checked when we got home (2,250 miles later) and it was down a quart. I added a quart and we have since put another 1,200 miles on it and it has used no oil.

Given this, I'm thinking one of my original thoughts was right (happens once in awhile :D). We go through the mountains and many hilly areas during the trek and I drive around 80 mph so the car is constantly down-shifting into 5th and 4th gears. I'm thinking the oil consumption is likely due to the higher RPMs, or quick jump to higher RPMs, which really doesn't happen around here (Michigan). Anyway, if it doesn't use any oil before my next change at 5,000 miles ( a bit over 1,000 miles from now), I'm not going to worry about it and just make sure to have a quart of the proper oil with me for the trip back out.

I changed my oil back in early April and switched to 5W-30. I haven't driven a whole lot since then because of the pandemic, but so far it doesn't appear to have lost any oil. Fingers crossed that continues!

I'm not a big believer in additives, but Techron or anything else with a good amount of PEA is an exception. It's one of the few that will never hurt anything and actually helps most of the time.

There's another idea that's been banging around in my head for a long time, and which I've posted a few times here; but let's see if this works.

Richard
Hi Richard et al,
Sorry it's been so long for an update but, I have not been able to function on the website for many months. I'm using MS Edge now for browsing and things seem to be working again.
Rich, I've done 4 courses of Techron spread over the time since we first communicated and I renewed the PCV valve. I wanted to be scientific to see what helped the oil consumption and when but, life got in the way. I know just cleaning the existing PCV valve and the first treatment of Techron did not seem to do too much to lower the oil consumption. The good news is the treatment and the new PVC has me over 2000 miles on a qt. It could be closer to 3K by now but one thing is for sure It is so much better that I don't check it that often! I switched to dino oil 10/30 (or my own syn blend) and change it sooner than with 100% Syn. Thanks and weez Appriciatezits, WalKia
