' Any idea of what is causing this noise?
Happens periodically when I am sitting still and turn steering wheel anywhere from 1/4 inch to 3 inches to left and will keep making the noise when the steering is not moving past that and I hold it there.

Sounds like the MDPS coupler issue but it would do it in either direction. You need to check the MDPS. You can start by just unplugging the motor (motor driven power steering, MDPS, it's an electric motor under the column) If it goes away with the motor unplugged you know that is where the issue is. It is fairly easy to drop the column down and remove the motor and take a look at the coupler, it is a rubber insulator between the two that cushions that jerk, hammer noise.

Thanks! I’ll try that and let you know! I was also thinking if a bad coupler, it would make the noise in both directions.
