2012 Kia Soul 2.0 Automatic - Vibration and timing belt

Hello,
My 2012 Kia Soul was purchased brand new and has been fairly good to me all these years. I too, took good care of it with car always garaged, Oil changes done before due dates and transmission fluid flushed and replaced as well and driving gently.
Living in Southern california, car has now close to 84K.
I drive it almost daily for short city commutes of 6 to 12 miles on average.
Car seems to be shaking more than usual when i come to a COMPLETE STOP at red lights, regardless if in NEUTRAL or in DRIVE.
Once the car starts rolling forward it goes away, but every time I am at a complete stop, it rattles.
I am obviously due for a timing belt service, which I have never done before.
The belt looks clean and perfectly fine, but I am not going to take a chance.
I am just wondering, is this a warning sign or is this something else?
I will not be able to do the timing belt for another 2 weeks so I am skeptical of the urgency and risk... And is it bad if it does break (is it interference engine or not?)
Again, no shaking while driving and car seems normal when moving, no other issues what s so over and no check engine lights.
Any thoughts?

A 2012 should have a timing chain and not a belt. Better post a pic of your motor so we can see for sure.

Have you changed the spark plugs? if not do those first and take a look at the conditions of each while your at it.
Thanks, it's definitely a rubber belt with lines on the inside going along the belt (running parallel to the edges of the belt), it's not metal... I wish.

I never replaced the spark plugs but that actually seems like it could be the root cause, I do use the cheapest gas for last several years (I used to go higher when it was new, but I realize, it doesn't make a difference).
I start without any trouble but someone on the forums stated that the car rumbles at red lights which is also what I'm experiencing.

I got a quote to replace both the belt and water pump for $1200 from a local mechanic... it would be $750 if I provide the parts... Can you direct me to the correct part# so that I can hope to save a little by getting the parts myself.

Unless this is a total rip off, I could check elsewhere, but this mechanic seemed trustworthy.

I'll check and do spark plugs as soon as i can and will consider the belt and water pump regardless since I'm getting close having to do that anyway...

We haven't seen your engine, but timing belts usually aren't hanging out in the open available for casual inspection. And the ribs (I would call them teeth) go perpendicular to the edges of the belt.

It sounds to me like you might be describing your accessory serpentine belt?

2012 Kia Soul 2.0L has Nu MPi and it uses timing chain. Before start on the engine part works, I would recommend you to check the Brake Pad, Rotor, and Lower Arm (Ball Joint) first. The description of your symptom seems like worned brake pad, uneven wear on rotor, or broken Ball Joint.

It doesn't seems like Engine or Transmission Mount (If these parts have problem you would feel vibration any time during driving, especially on acceleration), but it would be a good to check for the next.

Only the 2010 and 2011 2.0L has a timing belt. All the rest use a timing chain.

Are you taking about serpentine belts?

My apologies, I did confuse the serpentine belt for the timing belt (or chain).
I'm glad to read that the 2012 uses a timing chain.
I don't see how the brake pads or the rotors would be the issue, they are in good condition and were changed in time... rumble happens when completely stopped and even when in Neutral without use of any brakes (flat surface).
I'll check again to be sure as well as the ball joints
Sounds like you either have a bit of engine vibration or a bad engine/trans mount. Have it diagnosed properly. Also, does this happen when your air conditioning is on or you are on defrost (defrost uses air conditioner)? Try it with it on heat at the face vents and make sure air conditioning is off and see if it makes a difference.

Okay now we could narrow the point. I though that the rumble occurs while breaking down to 0 mph. Check the Transmission Mount and Roll-Rod on the bottom. This is common long-term issue for early 2010s Hyundai/Kia's small cars due to they reduce mounts from 4 to 3 with weak smaller mounts because of cost-down, :( we usually called them as "D-DDAL (D-shift stop vibration) in Korea.

Also, I don't know how many miles that your car has, but I believe it is good time to change all three mounts (Engine, Transmission, Roll-rod) with Outer Belt Kit (Fan belt, Idler Pulley, Tensioner Pulley, and Water Pump) for preventive maintenance since you experience that issue.
Either engine mount or misfire. They are mistake for a drive belt.

Try the CRC intake GDI cleaner or get an induction cleaning done with sea foam. Sounds like the shaking is a rough idle. That will help.

My 2012 is not a GDI and has a timing belt and is a 2.0L Exclaim. Are you sure you have a GDI? What size engine? You only feel this vibration when at a complete stop? Mine does this very slightly and much more when running the A/C. I think it is just in need of throttle body cleaning, or a slight adjustment needed for the idle which I think can only be done via the ECU and you would have to take somewhere to resolve that. Could also be your PCV valve, have you ever changed it? It is only like $12-15 on EBay. I replace mine about every 30K since it’s so cheap and easy to do yourself…. It will also help your gas mileage. Spark plugs could also very well be the problem.
2012 both engines use a timing chain but only the 1.6L was GDI. The 2.0L Nu engine was MPI in 2012-2013.

It wasn’t until 2014 the 2.0L Nu went GDI.

The only Soul engine that uses a timing belt was the 2010-2011 2.0L Beta II engine.
