During the process of changing my spark plugs I boroscoped the cylinders and took some pictures.

Note: Only allowed to attach 10 images per post so Post #1 cylinders #1 & 2, Post #2 cylinders #3 & 4

Note: In cylinder #3 the two intake valves happened to be in the open position.

Note: In cylinder #4 the two exhaust valves happened to be in the open or partially open position.

The inexpensive boroscope I used (purchased off Amazon) has a front facing camera and a side facing camera.

2014 Kia Soul 1.6L
74K miles
Purchased used with 40K miles
Since owning have only used full synthetic oil (mostly Pennzoil Platinum) - initially 5W-20 then switched to 5W-30
Since owning, oil changed approximately every say 2800 - 3500 miles
Since owning have only used Top Tier gas
Have occassionally used Chevron Techron but not for perhaps the past couple years or so

Awesome pics and really confirms what I've always maintained, i.e. if you don't have a spray wash over the valves you're going to have carbon buildup no matter what they say about using Tier 1 gas, synthetic oil, etc. You might be able to reduce it slightly by having less burn-off from dino oil and unburned impurities from cheapo gas, but there's no real substitution for having the fuel spray above the valve instead of directly inside the chamber. That's why everyone with GDI is switching to a hybrid model, where you get the fuel economy of direct injection but the cleaning power of manifold injection. Overall though your combustion chambers look pretty good, you really don't have much carbon buildup on your pistons and looks like really clean piston chamber walls. You can still see a real nice cross-hatch pattern.

I don't know...rust stains???

In the one picture it looks like a drop or small blob off some rust colored liquid but I think that is an optical illusion. I believe all the cylinder faces were dry.
