    2012 kia soul 1.6 oil.consumption

We got this Kia soul a couple of years back and the whole time we have had it we notice that a short while after every oil change the oil will be low as in on first notch at the bottom of the stick low. We have checked cold and hot we use Valvoline Max life and kia brand oil filters. We put oil back in and it goes away again, it's not on the plugs, it has no leaks as we know of, and does not smoke. No drips no puddles we are lost on this. Anyone ever see this before?

Have you ever checked your PCV valve?

Even if it doesn't smoke, you are still burning that oil.
The PCV valve is a cheap place to start, you can replace that by yourself with a wrench.

Unfortunately the 2012 and later 1.6L GDI engines have issues.

I will replace the pcv valve, what other issues should I be aware of on the souls? I thought they were supposed to be good vehicles.

They are good vehicles. Oil consumption is not engendered to Kia brand vehicles, it is an industry wide "phenomenon," even in some brand new cars.

You don't mention the mileage on your Soul, a critical piece of information. Also, what weight of oil are you using? Often times, especially in higher mileage engines (aka worn piston rings), switching to a higher weight oil can mitigate some of that usage.

Someone above said they were problematic engines, that is the reason I asked that. It has 120,000 miles, 5w20 Valvoline maxlife genuine kia filters.

After you change out the PCV, I'd suggest trying 5w-30. My dealer has put that in mine since day 1 and I've never burned oil.

You do have a high mileage engine and burning some oil should be expected. I've read some mechanics saying the 1.6 has an expected life of 125-150,000 miles. It really depends on maintenance.

The 1.6L GDI engines have issues - especially related to the quality of oil (synthetic is better because of low NOACK) and the change intervals (shorter intervals).
Also, they had a wide recall about reprogramming the PCM... something related to un-burned gasoline and/or oil being dumped in the catalytic converters and catching fire.

We also have to use high octane fuel or it will spark knock, I changed the plugs(denso iridium) and it didn't help. I will be changing the oil tomorrow, but if I buy a pcv valve should I get genuine or aftermarket? I usually buy genuine but if it's known problem I sometimes buy from auto parts stores.

See any oil in your driveway? Can you trace the leak?

My car is a '13 1.6L, and it would knock about once a month and trigger the check engine light. I also noticed I was leaking oil from somewhere near the rear main seal (where the engine and transmission meet up).. long story short I got a whole new short block under warranty. They machined the head and everything.

I'm assuming these problems are associated with the recall letter that went out recently regarding the 1.6L engines and catalytic converters overheating.

    Here's the thread if interested:
