    iPhone 4 and USB Connection

Let me start by saying that I understand that you need to use the Kia iPod connector cable in order to play music and display the info on the Soul's stereo.

When I use the Apple provided white USB cable with my iPhone 4, the stereo switches to Aux/other devices, but then the chime occurs every few seconds, and it appears that it's charging, then it isn't, then it is, then it isn't, etc. The display says something about reading device/mp3/or something along those lines, but never actually finishes (because the Kia cable is required). If I were to switch to Satellite Radio, for example, it appears as if the iPhone isn't even plugged in or charging (no lightning bolt on the battery).

I was hoping to be able to use the Apple provided white USB cable to simply charge my iPhone. I'll play the music over Bluetooth. Is this not possible?

Oh, and I have searched, but I couldn't find any post that specifically addresses this.

You are correct. You can not charge an iPhone using the Soul's USB port. I would recommend you get something like this: Walmart.com: Scosche Dual USB Car Charger: Auto Electronics (first one that came up in a quick search) or just get the Kia iPod cable. With that you can use the steering wheel controls too as well as have info displayed on the screen. Two thing I find lacking with streaming music over Bluetooth.

You actually CAN charge a phone off of the Soul's USB port, but it's tricky. The Soul's USB port only provides power if and only if there is a data connection between the car and what you want to be charging. For instance, I couldn't charge my phone either until I made my phone an external drive. Once I did that, the car recognized it as an external drive and provided constant power to it. If it does not recognize it as a external driver, then it shuts the power off.

Sorry, kinda hijacking this thread... You can play music over Bluetooth? I haven't figured out how to do that yet (admittedly I've only had my 2010 Soul 4u for about 24 hours now).

Is this possible on the 2010 model?

saint2e, as I understand it, you have to have bluetooth version 1.3 on your radio to stream music over bluetooth. Which only comes by default on the 2011 Souls. Otherwise you must either pay or some how weasel an update out of your dealership. I repeat, that is how I understand it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

kfergiez, I guess that's possible on other phones, but on an iPhone, it is not. Atleast not an unjailbroken one. Now I want to go test out my husband's HTC Inspire in my Soul lol!

My iPhone4 charges just fine with the kia cable. If I want to control via the iPhone i connect via bluetooth. if I want to use the radio/steering wheel controls I connect via the cable. As an added bonus if I am connected via bluetooth and I run a Nav program on my iPhone4 i get all verbal commands over top of the music/phone on the car speakers.

    Do Tell

I am also having problems getting my iPhone 4 to charge. I have the Kia cable and I also tried the iPhone cable in the USB port. No charging.

Can you explain where you set that up. Is it on the iPhone or a setting in iTunes that you used?

My iPhone 4 charges no problem with the OEM Kia cable. I picked mine up from my dealer for $38.00 plus tax. Cant believe what I read some other dealers charge for it.

    Doesn't work for me

I have the official cable (found it on eBay for $12!).

But when I connect my iPhone 4 I get a message on the phone saying something like this accessory is not optimized for iPhone 4 and I am able to play music, but it does not charge.

Before I go out and buy a cigarette-lighter style iPhone 4 charger, does anyone have a way to make this work? It's pretty frustrating that I have a USB port in the car and it does not charge my phone...
