problems with Google G1 phone playing music

I have the original Android phone, a Google G1 through T-Mobile. It's an awesome phone and I feel no need to upgrade. I had no problems getting the Bluetooth sync to work and I can voice dial and all that just fine. However ... I cannot get music to play thorugh the stereo. I plug in the USB cable and see the message "Reading USB" but eventually it gives up and says "Read Error". I have pressed the Mount USB button. I transfer files all the time from my computer to the phone using the same USB cable. does anyone have any idea why I would encounter this problem?

    thanks
    Steven

I do not think you can use the usb cable. Try the 3.5mm jack to your headphone port on your phone.

Compliments to you for having the OriG1nal Android phone. You have to use the OEM G1 usb cord that came with the phone. Not a regular usb to mini usb. If that does not work the your are SOL my friend.

G1 doesn't have a headphone jack, but I used mine both ways a few times.

If you have a cheap SD card, it doesn't transfer data quick eenough and it'll error out. I only use Class 6 memory, and never had a problem with my G1, or now with my Mytouch 3g Slide.

I am able to listen to music through the USB on both The Samsung Behold II and Motorola Cliq XT which both run Android. I have not tried with my G1, but I will try this week end. Have you rooted the phone? you might try and turn on usb debugging and see if that helps.

I noticed with the fender mytouch3g, i have to do a trick to get music to actually play.
    1. While in FM mode, plug in the USB Cable to the car and to the phone
    2. On your Android, you will get an option to mount the SD card meanwhile the car is attempting to read your media.
    3. At this point, swich the stereo back to FM (it gets automatically switched to Aux when you plugin the USB cable)
    4. at this point, on your Android select the option to mount the USB drive
    5. Switch your car back to Aux. Your phone will appear as if it was reconncted and will once again give you the option to mount
    6. Mount the SD card and you should be able to play music.

I'm using the HTC Incredible (Android 2.1) and it's a bit funky too. I have to make sure the entire stero unit is off, then plug in my phone. I have like 3 seconds to select "Use as a disk drive" on my phone and then it seems to connect and see my music ok. Otherwise it gives me an read error message or it opens up my ringtones folder and I can't access my actual music. Oh and bluetooth doesn't work, it always has problems trying to sync my contact list.
