Class 3 or 4 trailer hitch for Soul?

I'm looking to get a trailer hitch for my Soul. But the only ones I'm seeing are class 1. That means they come with a 1.25" receiver.

Well I want to use the hitch for a luggage rack for extra storage space on long trips. All the luggage racks I've seen want a class 3 or 4 hitch for the 2" receiver.

I could get a 1.25" to 2" converter but I'd rather find a hitch that had a 2" receiver already that was made for the Soul.. OR ... find a fold up luggage rack that used a 1.25" receiver.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I do not want roof rails.

I understand that class 1 hitches can only hold 200 pounds MAX at the hitch. I'd make sure to not go over that by placing light but big luggage in the carrier.

And it's either get this hitch installed...

or rent a bigger car for long trips to both parents houses.

I'd rather not give my money to the rental car company.

Yeah, probably isn't going to happen, I had a thread about this running on my site, and got some great advice. I could care less about class 2, 3, or 4, but needed a 2 inch receiver to carry my cargo tray on the back.

I got the Curt MFG class 1 hitch, and after seeing how they attach, no one will make a class 2 or higher because of the liability tha tyou'll tow something too heavy.

    What can you do?

    Get a class 1 hitch and a 1.25 to 2 inch adapter.

    That's what I did.

Keep in mind it'll drop your total weight you can tow or carry on the tongue by 1/2.

We do have a vendor doing R&D on a 2 inch receiver hitch for us, but he's got another project before that, and he's going to check to see legality wise what he can do. In other words, we are looking at a 2 inch class 1 rated hitch.

I'm not quite sure that they make a Class 3 or 4 hitch. I don't think that the frame of the soul can handle that. But then again.... Just a hunch, I really have no idea.

Well I just need to find a luggage carrier that uses a 1.25" receiver.

But I've searched and searched and can't find one. Found tons of bike racks that do but I'm not transporting bikes.

what is it that you don't like about the adapter approach - seems like it would allow you more flexibility with whatever you mount in the future ?

    I found this
    http://www.discountramps.com/receiver-hitch-carrier.htm

This carrier is for a Class I or Class II and has a 500 pound capacity.

I can easilly see that a few adults, a fully loaded Soul and a full hitch-carrier would exceed Soul's 800lbs maximim weight capacity... So be carful.

it's funny the carrier is rated for 500 pounds but class 1 hitches have a max weight of 200 pounds at the tongue.

get the hitch and carrier.. then have a welding shop permamently adapt the rack to fit the hitch.. no extra slop, no extra tongue lenght.
