    ECO package questions

Can someone clue me in on the whole ECO package thing? I'm preparing to buy a 2012 Soul and am not sure what's what. My questions are:

    1) Is it worth getting? I live in California and there's a lot of traffic, so I could see the stop/start option being a good thing. However, I've also read it can make the car kind of jerky. Anyone have experience with it?
    2) Am I correct that it's not available on the Exclaim model at all? On the Kia "build your own" website, it seems to be an option on the + but N/A on the Exclaim.
    3) Is it true that it's not yet available and will only be after the 1st of the year?

    Thanks.

I can't speak to US models but in the Canadian 2U model Eco can be turned off if it's annoying. Just test drove it so I can't really comment on real world performance yet (our car arrives Fri and I'll know more then).

you are talking about a different thing to what the first poster mentioned, they are referring to ISG (idle stop and Go) not the ECO mode that you are referring to. I have that feature on my 4u and is standard on all AT Soul models in Canada.
In the US ISG (Eco pak) is a late availability on the base model and +, not the Exclaim. In Canada it will only be available on a 1.6L AT ECO model, again late availability.

    Welcome Aboard, Shipmate!

When I Test Drove a 2012 Soul +, the Sales Rep had me turn the Eco Button on the dash to ON. We drove for a bit, and when I gunned the engine, it tended to act like a Governor (Speed Limiter), and wouldn't let me accelerate like I wanted to. She had me turn it OFF, and I could accelerate much easier, as if I were taking a Highway On-Ramp.

When I bought my Soul, I left the Eco Button OFF! About the only time I intend to use it, is when I head to West Texas next year on I-10, and then I'll use the Eco to help me crunch some extra miles between Gas Stations.

As for the Eco Package with the Idle-Stop-and-Go, I'd definitely look into this, before buying it. It's a costly Option, if you don't plan on using it. Here's a little something I found on the web..... look familiar Conwelpic?

courtesy of KGIS and Conwelpic here's a condensed version of how ISG functions

Idle Stop and Go (ISG) Description

Idle Stop and Go (ISG) function automatically switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill and starts it again as soon as the brake pedal is released. This not only reduces fuel consumption, it also lowers emissions. Idle Stop and Go (ISG) function also has a built-in sensitivity to driving safety and comfort.
The engine is not switched off if certain conditions relating to safety and comfort have not been fulfilled (for example, when the engine oil is still cold, when the battery is running low or when the outside temperature is below 3º C or 37F). It can be deactivated by pressing the ISG OFF switch on the crash pad lower panel.

    Sample scenario:
    vehicle moving
the transmission lever position is in D-range. The brake pedal is released
the engine is running (vehicle moving)
the driver brakes until the vehicle comes to a standstill
the transmission lever position is in D-range. The brake pedal is pressed
the engine stops. The symbol “AUTO STOP” lights up in the instrument cluster
the driver wants to continue the journey
the transmission lever position is in D-range. The brake pedal is released
the engine is running again. The symbol goes out.

Operation Condition for the ISG Function
Will function if these conditions are met

    - ISG OFF Switch is off
    - switch (seat/door/hood) closed
    - lever position in D or N range
    - brake pedal pressed or released
    - vehicle speed after driving higher than 8kmph (5mph)
    - a/c system operating correctly
    - engine coolant temperature over 78º C (172.4º F)
    - brake pressure not below 35kpa
    - battery SOC over 77% and temperature in the range of 2-55ºC (35.6-131ºF)
    - Steering wheel – operating angle below 180º
    - Parking condition – slope up hill <12%, down hill <8%
    - no ISG related part errors

    Won't function if:
    - large steering angle when car is stopped
    - low brake operating pressure
    - turn on the a/c with max blower
    - when battery condition is poor (low SOC)
    - active defroster of front or rear glass
    - unfasten driver's seat belt or open the door and hood
    - on a steep slope
    - with ISG system errors and other diagnosis
    - ISG OFF switch is on
    Cheers!

Does anyone know why it's not going to be available in the Exclaim model?

Sounds like I'm going to have to wait to try it out here in CA either way.

I don't know why it isn't going to be on the Exclaim model. Sometimes, I wish I had GDI in the Exclaim, too.

Kia's website and literature hasn't been the most reliable of late, so I think the jury's still out on whether this feature will ever be available on the Exclaim model.

Kia's not the only company offering this feature in other markets but delaying availability here. For example, Porsche and Audi offer ISG in other markets, but have said that the "US market isn't yet ready" for the technology. I'm not sure if that's a slam on US driving habits, some kind of veiled reference to the limitations of US emissions standards or a cover-up for them not being able to build enough models with this feature, but it does seem odd....

As for the "Active ECO", I just switched it on for the first time yesterday, and intend to use it for this (my third) tank of gas, after being unimpressed by my gas mileage so far in the normal mode. First impressions are that it uses engine torque, rather than revs, to keep things moving along, and that it heads for the highest gear possible as quickly as possible. Still, the engine has enough power to pull this off without making the car feel sluggish at all (to me), and it has the side-benefit of keeping the engine noise down. At this point, I'm not sure I'll ever turn it off, assuming that there's an actual fuel economy benefit....

Sorry to be such a newbie, but what is Active ECO? Is it available on all the models? And which model do you have that you're not impressed with the mileage of? What are you getting on average?

Active ECO basically, in simple terms, makes shifts faster so that you dont go high up in the RPM's and use more gas. Keeps RPM's low and also moderates the way the air conditioner functions. All in the sake of saving gasoline(Petrol) and saving the environment. I have the option on my 2012 Soul + and i have it on all the time, I think ive turned it off 2 times since ive had the car and can definitely tell the difference on the amount of power the engine puts out. Be all end all, it saves you money at the pump.
