    Need a new key.

Hi. I am in need of a spare key for my car and am really confused about what to get and how much it's going to cost. Don't need a remote opener as I have the two that came with the car and the two that came when I installed the auto start. Is this something I can get (cheaply) at the dealer or at Ace Hardware. Are those $15 key blanks on ebay a good deal?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't quote me on this..... and hopefully someone with the correct answer will chime in..... but I believe the Keys are Chipped, to where you couldn't start the car without one.

If you were to use a regular Key Blank, like from Walley World, Home Depot, Lowes, etc... it would fit the Doors, but wouldn't work in the Ignition, and MIGHT..... lock up your engine, as a security measure.

I read somewhere, that Replacement Keys were over $100. Not sure if that's Kia's price, or the Dealer's.

Do you happen to have the little Plastic Tab, that came with the Original Keys, that was on the Keyring? It's supposed to have a Code on it, so that the Dealer can make you a Replacement Key. You will have to pay for it, but at least it would be Keyed for your car.

    Best of Luck!

    Cheers!

you are right except on the plastic tab. if you don't have it, dealer will use your serial number to call a tech support line to get the password for your car. if i remember correctly, it take 3 fail to start in a row to lock the engine and can take up to 24 hours to unlock by itself but i'm not sure on this one.

What would happen if, say 3 years from now, it's cold as heck, you go to crank your car and it barely turns over. You surmise, it's the battery, but you try to crank it 3 or more times with no luck. Would the engine be locked then?

The U.S. 2010 & 2011 Souls are NOT chipped. Any cheap key will open the doors and start the Soul. I am not sure of the 2012 U.S. Souls though.

Only the Canadian Souls are chipped and even though we can get a cheap key to open your doors, it will NOT start the car without the chip. All it does is it turns over but does not ignite.

    Hope this helps you

and look for a key blank at several hardware stores - shouldn't cost any more than three or four dollars for the blank and having it cut -

This is correct! I'm a parts manager at a Kia dealership. And 2012 USA Souls do not have a chip either. I dought you will find a correct key blank at a hardware store. but you never know.

If your trying to start a car that has a chip key and you try to start it without the chip key, Yes, 3 tries and the electric system will disable the car from starting. It's a Great antitheft system for cars! As for your question, as long as you have the correct key, No, it will not disable the starting system.

My local locksmith had Kia blanks and made me a copy for $1.00. Works great and doesn't even have the black plastic head on the key, very slim.
