225/50/16 or 215/55/16 are both safe bets, though the 225 is pushing the stock rim width a bit. Check clearance at "lock" in both directions between the tire and chassis, and between the tire and strut body, you may be able to run a 235 or so.

i think he is talking sidewall depth not tread width.... probably trying for a comfier ride. If you go too high on the profile you will knock the speedo out too much.

    Yep - you're right and I should've been clearer:

    To get more width:

The 225/50/16 has a sidewall height of 50% of 225, hwich is actually equivalent overall diameter to the OE 205/55/16, with about the same sidewall height.

You *may* be able to get away with a 235/50/16, which would have a slightly taller sidewall and slightly wider tread, but I don't know if any 16" tires are made in that size. You also don't want the tread to be too much wider than the rim width or you get some strange handling characteristics.

To get a higher sidewall:A 215/55/16 or even a 225/55/16 would fit, the 225/55/16 would be the tallest you can run to stay within the OE size range, with a sidewall height just over 4 3/4". The 225/55/16 is the same outside diameter as the OE 225/45/18 tires equipped on Sport and ! models.

Another option for higher sidewalls is to run a 15" rim with 205/65/15, 205/60/15, or 225/50/15 tires. Again, the 205/60/15 is about as tall as you want to go.

Note that larger overall diameter means numerically higher gearing - slower acceleration but lower highway cruising RPM. Smaller overall diameter means better acceleration but higher RPM on the highway.

usually they recommend you dont go more than 3% different. The wheels and tyres you currently have are the best standard ride the Soul can do. There are calculators on the internet that give you the differences between the tyres you have and the tyres you want to progress to. What ratio are the current ones you have?..... i have a calculator on my works computer and can tell you tomorrow.

the ratio i am asking is the ratio of tyre height compared to width.

So a tyre that is 205/55 16. Is 205mm tread width.......the tyre wall height is 55% of this tread width....and the wheel rim diameter is 16inch.

So if you change to a 205/60 16... you will get a slightly higher sidewall which means a softer ride, but slightly less responsive steering. Its up to you how much you UP the profile.... but 3% difference is the usual max difference.

The figures i have quoted are for example...... i have no idea what size tyres your car currently wears.... but you can make the change from whatever you currently have.

Bringing up a previous thread on this issue rather than create a new one..

I saw the comment about 225/55/16's.. would 215/60/16's work on an OEM wheel? And, an OK fitment for the car? According to tire calculators, it's pretty close in diameter to my stock 225/45/18's.
