I want to change my own transmission fluid. Ordering KIA transmission fluid and filter. How much fluid does it hold and what is the KIA filter number? I have a little over 2,000 miles on it now. Just want to be ready to change it.
What is the Kia recommendation for this????...... i have never changed the gearbox oil in any of my cars in 30 years of motoring.... mind you - i did once hear that an oil change on a manual soul to a very thin synthetic, improves the gearchange significantly.... but cant verify that.
Are you thinking changing the Engine Oil? The Transmission Fluid does not need to be changed at 2,000 or even 3,000 miles.... check your owners manual Some cars now a days never change the tranny fluid.
A number of Mini Cooper owners found out the lifetime fluid is in respect to the lifetime of the warranty, not so much the lifetime of the car.
A traditional or CVT transmission absolutely needs the fluid changed out. A manual transmission doesn't necessarily need the fluid changed every 30,000 miles since gear oil is long chains that basically keep the gears from really wearing on each other. Over time though the gears will shear the oil and viscosity will be lost. A synthetic gear oil from the factory can last 100,000 before it should be changed out to insure the viscosity can reduce wear.
This honestly is not a bad idea. The continual refreshing of the lost/consumed additives on a regular basis will help keep the trans in good operating condition. The filter/screen still needs changed at it's recommended intervals though-this should not be overlooked.
I'm going to drain/refill mine and change the filter sometime over the next few weeks, and I'll note how much fluid this takes to get the level back to the correct fill. I did notice that the pan has a convenient drain plug to prevent a huge mess like you would encounter with some other models when trying to drain the fluid without a drain plug.

I think dropping the pan should be done the first time so you can get to the filter. Just undo the bolts on 3 of the 4 sides then loosen the last side and allow the fluid to drain into a pan. It's inevitable you'll spill so lay down cardboard and wear expendable clothes. After most of the fluid is out you can drop the pan, clean off the magnet, then wipe down the inside.
I don't think the torque converter has a drain plug. I haven't noticed one but I haven't looked hard
At the next 30k I'd have the transmission flushed instead of dropping the pan. Reason being, the first time the fluid was changed only about 40% was changed out because 50% is retained in the torque converter and the other 10% is in the cooling lines.
Getting the level right on refill is the biggest PITA. The car needs to be running and the new fluid can be hard to see on the dipstick because it's so clear. If you overfill it's bad because the fluid can foam and cause problems. More is not better.
The volume for the transmission is located in the owner's manual.
For the Honda Odyssey van they wanted you to change the fluid
3 times in quick sucession to get the oil out of the convertor.
I don't remember if you had to also change the filter out 3 times,
too. Still have the service manual will look.
What does Kia do when they charge you to change it? I'm anal
about fluid changes including coolant, brake fluid, transmission &
engine oil. Found that's the best you can do for any vehicle.
