Talking New Soul - Break in period - Question

    Hi,

I just signed the paper works yesterday at the dealership and got myself a Soul!

I have a question, where I live, they ran out of the SX model and the dealership was planning to ask one of their lot guys to drive 300km down from dealership in another city. I'm sure it will be highway driving about 90km/h to 110km/h.

I'm worried about the break in period for new car, from what I was reading, you shouldn't be reving more than 3500rpm and no hard acceleration...etc. I am not a mechanic, but is this good for a newcar (highway driving for 3hrs at 100km/h)?

Another option the dealership asked me is if I'm willing to pay a $300 delivery charge, so can be trcuked down?

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks.

you should go get it yourself so its driven "easy" back home. there are lot of dealers around where I work and time to time i see how hard the vehicles are driven and i would not want to buy one of those at any cost. evn though there is no special "break-in" period for modern vehicles, it does recommend driving with caution the first 1k-3k miles.

the car should be fine if its not abused.... and provided the speed is varied a bit along the way it wont hurt it at all. However if you can afford the 300 dollars and you intend keeping the car for a long long time - i personally would like the vehicle to be trucked, then i could do the running in myself.

See if they will split the trucking costs 50/50 that way they dont have to pay a mechanic to go over there.

I would prefer to do my own break in too.

I got mine with 23 miles on it, and was even worried about what happened during those miles of test drives- esp. since I have a manual transmission.

Don't worry about it, the car will be fine. Worry about more important things. Such as what your first modification to it will be

Mine was a demo - which scared me a little. It had 512 miles on it when I got it. The only saving grace was the dealership never let people drive it by themselves so I doubt anyone got too looney. I hope anyway. Now I have close to 5K on it and, knock wood, no problems.

The dealer told me that the days of "break-in" period are over????? The days where you didn't drive over like 55 for X amount of miles?? Holy cow.....if there truly is a break-in period....I bet I truly screwed my car. UGH. I've had it a month and I certainly have pushed 75 on the highway. UGH.

The owners manual does talk about a break in period, varying speed etc.

Mine had 2 miles on it when I test drove it LOL so I was the first to drive it, I am at about 1200 miles now, I live 17 miles form work so during the week it is only back and forth so I do dive 40 to 65 mph (paved country roads so not much traffic), this week I have had it up to 75, 80, 85 MPH and passed a couple slow pokes, I plan to take it easy pretty much for awhile or until about 10K miles.

Tell the dealer you'll drive it down. Get on a bus and get there.

I'm speaking from experience... Once had an offer to drive new
vans from Olympics in Atlanta back to Pittsburgh. I knew to vary
the speed and to keep it under 55 mph. There were ten of us to
bring back vans. I would have not bought them because some of
the drivers drove as fast as they could. Meanwhile we all arrived
at the same time. Whoever lucked out and bought the one I drove
would get the one that was driven right. The other 9 were peices
of crap if break in instructions were true. I respect vehicles therefore
    I am...

I would tell then to truck it down for free or I would just go buy it from the dealership that has it in stock, and they would not get the sale!

I just noticed the date of the OP.....did you get your car?
