Ok, small update on this, the cable that comes w/car is for 4S and below, the usb line that comes w/the iPhone 5, will not charge the phone from the USB port.
You need a USB plug in from 12 V port, then charge from there. And believe me, if you are using bluetooth you need to keep it plugged in on a trip of an hour.

I use the oem Kia cable with a lightning adapter on it to use and charge my IPhone 5 in my Soul. It works great.

Doesn't the iPhone 5 need a different voltage to recharge than a 4S, 4, or 3Gs.

My Samsung galaxy SIII will not charge in my Soul. How do I get it to charge. Most inconvenient when on the road.
A regular car charger?

USB 12-volt car chargers are cheap to buy. A lot of them have the required 2.0+ amps to charge iphones and other newer android phones.
Just go out and get one to charge your phone and leave that usb port alone. You dont want to break the usb port going over a heavy bump.
I guess i missed something.... why would a usb charge cord break the usb port on the phone or the Soul? The usb on my phone is micro usb and more delicate than the standard usb jack on the dash, and the usb on the Soul is designed to have a cord hanging out of it for ipod, i use a 16gb thumb drive in mine personally, I have charged my tablet off the Souls port, while having my portable dvd in one power port, phone in the other which has a usb piggybacked on it where i had my wifes phone plugged in. 2 1/2 years with over 60,000 miles and no issues this way.
