    2012 + manual automatic transmission

Hello all. I tried the search function here but most likely didn't use the correct terminology.

I just purchased my first Soul, a 2012 +. It has the choice of either the automatic transmission and also sliding the shifter over in drive to manually change the gears. First, what is the correct terminology for this style of transmission?

This is the first car I owned, or even drove for that matter, that has this style of transmission. It seems like a cool idea, but what is the main marketing for this style? I'm also curious to hear how you all prefer to drive yours - full automatic or manual. Do you find mpg better for one over the other? When I think manual transmission I think stick shift and clutch, but this is cool too.

    Thanks.

Oops, I just noticed that I posted this in the Gen 2 forum instead of the Gen 1 forums. Can a mod please move this for me? I'd greatly appreciate it!!

The actual term Kia uses in the owners manual is "Sports Mode". When I had my 1.6 I used Sports mode almost exclusively. I don't like when it decides to shift. I also hate when it goes to downshift and decides it needs 5k RPM and 4th gear on highway hills. You can drive it more efficiently if you time your shift points appropriately.

I have always liked to do my own ****ing on an automatic. But in the 70's when I did that I messed up the transmission bands pretty quikly!

The Kia auto transmission is made to do that electronically! No bands to mess up. Its OK to do that!

I use it for down shifting when I drive through the mountains on vacation every year, or to keep it from shifting when im trying to maintain a certain speed & rpm during snowy and icy conditions. It really has no purpose in a soul other than reducing the travel distance of the shifter in my opinion. In my 2003 GTI which had a nearly identical shifter setup I could shift it manually to get the turbo wound up a little higher, but it would still shift when you hit the rev limiter in the manual shift mode.

It will NOT help you with mileage, manual transmissions get better mileage due to lack of a torque converter.

When accelerating, let the computer do the shifting....it's hard to out-think a computer. It's programmed to protect both the engine and the AT.

The only time I've found the manual shift option to be valuable, is when exiting the Interstate and having to drop from 80 mph, to Zero in less than 500'.
I usually shift DOWN when the RPM's drop below 3500 rpm. Without ever touching the brake pedal (saving the brake shoes) I can usually get down to the stop sign at the bottom of an Exit Ramp, where only a light application of the brakes brings me to a full stop.
I've found NO benefit at all to using the manual shift mode during acceleration. Actually that causes a lag in what would otherwise be smooth acceleration, every time you shift gears. The shifter on the Soul is not a "Hurst Swifter Shifter".

On rare occasions, when I've been out on the highway and encounter a hill, the AT will shift down to 5th gear when climbing the hill, but will remain in 5th gear even after topping the hill.... so I manually shift it to 6th and return the shifter to the Auto mode and everything is cool again. That only happens rarely.

    Cheers Mate!

I work at Enterprise and drive all types of cars all day. I have to agree with TechnoMage, the manual option does provide a lag when accelerating in almost every car. The only time i'd recommend to use it is if you're on a hill. Down here in florida we don't really have those lol. I can't tell you how many customers come back to me and say "This car won't shift out of gear" and I have to tell them they're in the manual option and not regular drive.

they only time I've used the manual feature, is going up and down extremely steep hills and in winter time with snow on the ground will take off in 2nd or will down-shift when coming to a stop and let the engine do some of the braking (use to do this when I drove manuals). All the other times I let the transmission shift for me - unless I suddenly get the urge
