    Question License plate question

Just curious ...not just on this forum but like a LOT of them - I notice people cover their plates with a symbol or a blob or blackout, etc. I don't do it and wondered if there is a good or valid reason for it?

It is possible, if you know how, to identify the owner of a vehicle by the plate number in some states. This information, in theory, can then be used for identity theft or other crimes. It would be a small piece of a larger picture of the person.

There is. It is part no. 86519-B2010, and it is not a pain to install. It can be had for well under $10.00 if you search around.

There is a thread where a bunch of us posted our personalized plates. I don't see the problem with it. Guys at car shows don't make a habit of taking off their plates. Paranoia, that's all it is.

They can get more than that. In most states, anyone who works for any law enforcement agency or an insurance company can pull up the owner's complete DMV file. In a few states, so can private investigators, banks, car dealers, or tow truck drivers. And of course, so can anyone with a connection to someone who has access.

And then there are the criminals who want counterfeit plates with real numbers on their getaway cars so they can't be traced to them and won't trip "invalid plate number" alarms with the many license plate scanners that are being deployed all over the place. That's not at all far-fetched. Some drivers have used counterfeit plates just to avoid tolls.

So it's fair to say that the risks of publishing your plate number on a forum may be small, but they do exist; and as the plate scanners become more common, the motivation for criminals to use counterfeit plates will increase, and so will the risks.
