    2011 vs. 2013

    Hello Everyone,

I am a new member here, and a new Soul owner, but a long time Kia owner.

We bought the wife a 2011 Soul Sport a few months back, and both of us love the car. Not only is it fun to drive, it is comfortable and quite zippy.

I have been driving a 2005 Kia Spectra since it was brand new. I always loved the car, however as I am getting older and doing more driving, I am getting tired of the manual transmission, and want something more comfortable.

This brings us to now, where we are in the process of getting ready to purchase another Soul because I love her car so much. We have found a 2013 Soul ! fully loaded with only about 7000 miles. It looks like it never had an owner, and was used in a car dealership for an employee to drive back and fourth.

I know this has been talked about in other threads, but nothing has matched my specific questions when searching. I am aware that the gas mileage has been a point of disappointment for many owners. I am well aware I am not going to get the 33 mpg out of a Soul like I did out of my spectra, and the 12.7 gal tank is a little disappointing as it means no matter what the mpg is I will be at the station more often, however...

What is the mpg on the 2013 compared to the 2011 in practical purposes? I know much of it is in how you drive, and I know what the estimates are, but honestly I am quite shocked at the amount of people what are claiming they only get 24-26 mpg on the highway. I thought with the 6 speed auto you would get much better compared to the 2011 4 speed. Am I wrong on this?

My wife has a heavy foot and is averaging around 25-26 on her Soul. When I have driven it for a day or two, I have been able to get her up to 27ish (this is with a mix of her heavy foot and my driving, and it is actual math, not what the dash says).

Basically the biggest thing I am scared of is going down to 26-27 average. I don't mind it being lower, but I was hoping for more of a 29-30 average. I am probably 80+% highway on my cars.

I know this was long, and I appreciate anyone who has stuck thru it with me

Thanks for your opinion... The fact is I will probably get the car anyway, but this is just something that has been on my mind...

I don't have the info you need, but I would get that car looked over by a third-party if those 7000 miles were put on by an employee at the dealership. Or at least make sure you have a good warranty on it still. I'm sure you know this already

Well it coming from carmax. We bought a car previous from them and overall it was good (the car was a dud but that was my fault buying a 6 year old Chrysler with almost 100,000 k moles).

I spoke to my kia dealer right next to the carmax. He said it would be 110 for them to check it but his recommendation was to just drive it and use the 60k warranty left from kia as he said this carmax is usually pretty good at their refresh of cars, and it isn't uncommon for kia's from carmax to end up at this dealer to be looked over.

Since driving styles vary so widely this is a tough question to answer.
From what I have experienced and what I have heard anywhere from 25-29 is achievable.
More highway, less city, mileage goes up and vice versa.
Personally...I like the 2010 4 banger and auto transmission similar to the ones found in our beloved elantras. That configuration served us well.
After owning the 6 speed auto for 3 years now, I'm not convinced it's any better than the 4 speed auto it replaced.
The problem is the claims Kia makes seem to never be realized (cough...cough...gas mileage...kia got caught...cough) and we buy based on claims and ratings.
If you like the car buy the car for what it is and live with the mileage it may or may not deliver.
My feeling after 3 years is this...If Hyundai made this car it would be a better car from day 1.
While I like ours it impresses me in no way/shape/form from any standpoint.
A capable little truckster that suffers in some ways but fills a niche and validates its existence.

I can't see any reason that a 2013 wouldn't get the same as the 2011 in similar types of driving. Nobody can predict what you will actually get. There is hundreds of thousands who purchased this vehicle so reading a few posts online of people that didn't get the mileage they hoped is a bit lob-sided. Without knowing in detail why they did not get it as there are so many variables that can cause this.

I have no problems with my 2012 2.0L with regards fuel economy, would like more but who wouldn't, but its not bad.

Thanks for the repies guys... please understand this was not a post about why does everyone say it's poor milage (sorry if it came across like that). It was more of a question on the 6 speed transmission vs the 4 speed.

Maybe it's me, but it would seem a 6 speed would be running 65 mph at a lower rpm, which would mean more mpg, but then I guess the weight of the car vs the engine size could be a factor...

    I've got the same Soul.2013 + with 2.0L A/T.
You'll get very close to 29mpg for hwy miles driven at legal speeds.
My overall combo miles(town&hwy)is around 25-26mpg.
Yeah, you'd think it would be better, right?
    Tank is a bit small.
    Hey,gas prices coming down!
    Whats not to like?

Completely different engines from 2011 to 2012 , My 2010 2.0 with 4 speed automatic , and my 2012 2.0 with 6 speed automatic got virtually the same gas mileage .

The biggest thing the 6 speed did , was lower engine rpms and create a better driving experience .

I had always found the 4 speed auto in our elantra to be a tad bit lethargic when it came to shifting and this 6 speed is no different.
Lumbers along in top gear until it senses the need for speed and downshifts but a bit too late/lethargically i.m.o.
I thought the 2.0 with the 4 speed was an adequate if not a great set up while nestled under the hoods or our elantras.
While nothing stellar or too high strung it delivered rock-solid reliability and adequate performance all while delivering close to 30 mpg day in-day out and even better in highway only driving.
Of course...the wifes soul ain't the wifes elantra and aerodynamics and curb weight probably come into play as well.
If I would have known then when I purchased 2 of them, I would have lined my driveway with bumper-bumper elantras and never have had to look any further than my front door for my next new car.
