If you add a spare tire, do you lose the under floor storage compartment in the Soul or does it fit below that or elsewhere? We sometimes go on 250-300 mile trips across the AZ desert on rural roads and I hate not having a spare.

it fits under the tray where the mobility tire kit is located, but it must be a compact spare, if you use a full size spare you may have to modify the storage tray. This is info on the 2013 model, but I don't think in this area of the car its changed on the 2014 in this respect. But as I have not actually seen a 2014 model I can't confirm exactly if this is the case, maybe someone who has can confirm this,
This is on my 2012 model and this is the same for 2013.

I just checked on my 2014. It looks the same as the pic but without the spare. Where does one buy a compact spare?

I was told today - "you don't need a spare, you have roadside assistance for 5 years"

its a temporary spare, with limit speed 50-80 kmph its designed to be used till as such time you can get the original repaired, which should be as soon as possible. There is no set mileage but its not going to be good for the car if you leave it too long. Compact spares have been around for decades the situation has never changed in its use.

Yes I understand and I would change it out asap. With the mismatch I wonder it you should swap the flat off the front with one off the rear and put the (mismatch) spare on the rear. I would think a mismatch would be less bad on the rear rather than on the front drive axle.

you could do that, if you are able and probably a good idea if you don't plan on getting it repaired for a while, but when the flat occurs the conditions are not always suitable to start switching two wheels around and not the best when working with the standard jack. But its your call when the situation arises.
I did a rough check on my 16" compact spare vs my standard 18" alloys and the difference in overall diameter is about 1-1.5"

I am surprised by the cost of the spare. I have never priced one before and just expected it would be a cheaper item. Necessary - I get it - just thought it was a less expensive item.

I see your point, but if Kia lists only the T215/80D16 for the the 16,17 and 18" then they must feel it does the job as long as its used in a temporary situation. You can always get a regular full size spare if you wish, it will fit in the wheel well but it could effect the under floor storage tray as its much larger in thickness, but not sure if this is the case on the 2014 model. But how often do you get a flat? It's been at least a couple of decades since I've had one.

There's a side benefit to having the compact spare if you have the under-floor organizer. Without it, there's no good center support for the floor organizer, which in turn is the support for the fold-up floor that goes on top. I found this out the hard way when I carried about 100 pounds of solid landscaping blocks in the back and put a slight warp in my organizer & upper floor. I managed to work most of it out, but there's just no good support in the middle without that spare.

As far as where to locate the spare, since you should only be using it long enough to get your other tire fixed, it shouldn't matter. I see people driving around on donuts all the time and it's a really foolish thing to do.

In my base, we leave the back open with nothing there. We have found that we prefer the open storage space and make better use of it this way. At first I was going to get the cover and tray but then decided not to. We use it for hauling small stuff like groceries, etc and like its space. For larger stuff, I use the Exclaim.

I know what you're saying here. I like it both ways. I do like the depth of the cargo area for some stuff, and you get a little more height. On the other hand, I find the "flat" floor when I put the seats down a little more useful for me than the deep well. But that's for right now. If I change my mind, I'll just put the cover and organizer in my wife's car.

It's not a locking dif, so it isn't a big deal. Once again, you aren't supposed to run the small spare forever. Just the miles it takes to get to a tire repair place. 50 miles on the spare isn't going to hurt the dif. IMHO. Heck, I'd bet 200 miles wouldn't hurt it....

This is really good to know about. I plan on getting a Fathom Blue 2014 tomorrow. When I test drove the car on Monday, I did look at the area where the spare sits, I don't like the "fix-a-flat" idea of this. I mentioned to the sales guy that I think I would like to keep my spare from the 2010 I am gonna trade in, and he said at the time that it wouldn't be a problem. I will make sure that is part of the deal.
