2014 Soul Exclaim - Test Drive Impressions

    Hi All,
First post on the forum. I wanted to relate my experience from my test drive of the 2014 Soul with Exclaim trim and Whole Shebang pkg. I have not driven a Kia before including the Soul but have been looking at various models for a bit. Wife & I decided we wanted a 3rd car for run about duty and general fun. I am into all of the gadgets so of course the 2014 Soul caught my eye.

I drove a Soul with the Exclaim trim and Whole Shebang package. I also climbed all over it and explored just about everything. I loved everything about the vehicle and think it is a great fit for what we want but for one thing: engine noise. When I pressed on the accelerator the engine made a huge racket, it was very surprising. When I eased off the accelerator everything was quiet again but the engine noise was very off putting. Has anyone else noticed this? I am hesitating on ordering one based on this noise. I think Kia could have added more sound deadening to the firewall to compliment the rest of the car.

I found the level of equipment extraordinary and the fit/finish seemed quite high. But that loud engine noise at throttle has me worried.

    Your thoughts?

The one I drove was Fathom Blue which I did not love. Leaning towards either Black or White (wish it was a pearl). Wife does not want Yellow though I do!

    Thanks, John

Hello and welcome. I don't find the engine in mine loud and the 2014 is supposed to be quieter. I believe that you should drive another car with the 2.0 (Exclaim or Plus model), or perhaps the 1.6 version base to see about the noise. If another does not duplicate the noise, then I would say you drove a defective unit. I find that very odd. I am sure that once this gets read you will have all kinds of responses since we talk about noise all the time from various sources.

Kia has been dinged by most reviewers for an "unrefined" engine. Our 2014 Forte also has a louder than expected engine, especially at idle when cold. I don't notice it as much once under way. You really may not notice it if you're coming from an american car, but any import other than Kia or Hyundai will have a much quieter engine. It doesn't seem to affect reliability so I'm not concerned at this point. Hopefully, Kia will address this in future models (and probably raise the price)

Test drive a few other Souls. I found they varied considerably with noise and vibration. The one I have is so quiet at idle you cannot hear or feel anything (except for a tiny bit of ticking), you actually have to hold your hand on the steering wheel and still struggle to even feel anything, it is almost as if the engine isn't even running. It is also fairly quiet up to about 2K RPMs. As it starts breaking 2.5K RPM's the engine starts to become audible and vibration picks up. But overall, my car is very quiet. Having said that, I drove some 1.6L and 2.0L Souls that were rough, raspy, loud or vibrated. I suspect all cars have variations but the Soul seems especially prone to this. So again, just test drive a handful of Souls to see if you can find one that sounds and feels within a range you are comfortable with or not.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Coming from my Lexus ES I knew it would be different but the engine noise under throttle just sounded so harsh. Will test another one to see if it is tolerable.
The rest of the '14 Soul is really fantastic - the panoramic roof is awesome as is the roomy back seat and the power folding mirrors. I am in lust and want one, I just need to satisfy my concern about the engine thrash under throttle before I purchase.

My Toyota Echo with 145K on it had a much quieter engine, but it'll stay together and if not the warranty is unbeatable. Nothing to worry about other than resale value.

Noticed the harsh noise under acceleration and auto trans shifting too when I test drove the 2014. It's one of the negatives you would have thought they would have improved upon given the price increase and them claiming how much better the 2014 is. Can't believe they overlooked it.

The tranny is an adaptive type so the shifting changes as you drive more and more miles. It'll likely smooth out after a few hundred miles.

Thanks for the confirmation about the noise under acceleration, I was really surprised by it since the rest of the package is so strong.
