    Royal Purple vs. AMSoil

I've been reading a few things here where you'll are raving about these two brands of oil for your car. In the past I have never cared what brand to use but for some reason all this talk has me wanting to get one of these and even go as far as changing the oil myself which I haven't done since the late 80's on a crappy Mercury Lynx.

Is there a difference between these? I did some research and as for Royal Purple it looks like I can score the oil but not their filter unless I want to go to PepBoys in Chicago, which I don't. I couldn't find anyone as of yet that sells AMSoil near me but I'm still looking.

Anyone had the mpg or performance improvements and longer life that these both say they give?

More importantly what are some of the drawbacks to these, not counting the price?

    Take care, Gary

I know about 10yrs ago when I started driving and changing my oil I switched to Royal Purple. I have never used Amsoil so I am not gonna dog it. The only place I could find it was at NAPA. Now the are selling it in a lot more places. I have never used their filters and you don't have to. I use NAPA's filter. The price really is cheaper in the long run. You pay a little more at the time but you can run it a lot longer than regular oil.
The only reason my last car lasted was because of RP I swear to that. I notice that I get better gas mileage and HP. I had a friend switch to RP from Mobil1 and he has noticed a MPG increase of 5. I had to rub it in his face that a girl made him switch but that is what friends are for. I don't see any draw backs but I am sure there are some.

I will forever and always use and love Royal Purple! Pink is my fav. color but having an actual purple oil is kinda cool. Just know that it is RP and not all the others!

    FYI

I've talked with two different KIA service departments (one in Ontario and one Quebec) both said "there is no recommendation by KIA to put synthetic oil in Soul". One even went as far to say "you can (put synthetic oil in) if you want but I'm not telling you to or recommending it".

I believe that (A) they wanted more of my money or (B) it would be better; they both would have recommended it.

Personally, my synthetic oil of choice is Mobil 1... And I drive all my cars exceptionally hard.

    Just thought I'd share.

My previous car was a KIA Sorento. I put synthetic oil (RP) in it after a couple thousand miles. I saw no significant difference in gas milage and I was checking it on a regular basis.

    Also, Consumer Reports article... http://www.moneybluebook.com/article....oilchange.php

says that there is no significant difference between regular oil and synthetic.

Although with synthetic you will change oil less frequently. Check it out.

The whole reason I started changing my own oil is because I paid for synthetic oil and they didn't put it in my car. I as a woman decided then it was time to do it all myself except body work. That was 10yrs ago.
Of course the don't recommend putting synthetic oil in because you can let it run longer and won't be in to change it as soon.
I let the Kia Dealership put RP in at 1000miles and they didn't really say anything except that because of the RP that I brought in I can run it 6000miles without changing her. I will change after 7500miles. Next oil change is me doing it myself. I enjoy it to much and I hate other people touching my car!

    This site is BS...http://www.moneybluebook.com/article....oilchange.php
....its someones web blog nothing more..

There is clear scientific proof through hundreds of lab and real world testing that synthetic oil is far superior in every way versus dino oil except for price of course.

The reason you got that answer or no answer is because most mechanics are ignorant regarding oils and lubricants. Also, dealerships want you to use their bulk oil which they make profit from by selling you more frequent oil changes.

The research speaks for itself...synthetic is far superior to dino oil.

You can buy AMSOIL direct online. You sign up for a 6 month or 1 year preferred customer membership and further save...and the shipping cost is very reasonable.

put some kind of synthetic in 4runner at first change and then for several others b/c kind i used allegedly coated engine and folks were talking about running out of oil and engine wasn't damaged, BUT i have subscribed to changing the blood in my vehicles every 3000 miles (no matter what manual states) and was told i was wasting money b/c even regular oil doesn't break down in that amount of time and was still coming out fairly clean so i don't know...

I'm trying to decide if I'll end up doing this myself... the dealership only charges me $20 plus disposal fee.. I think it will come down to a question of if I think it takes longer to pop by the dealership and have them do it than for me to do it at home... so far my initial 1500 Mi change was done when they were doing recall fixes so I had to be there anyhow
