WHEN to swith to Synthetic oil

Making the SWITCH to Synthetic Oil
I'm a huge fan of synthetic oils and run 100% synthetic in my Dodge Cummins diesel. However, Cummins was specific in their manual about when it's permissible to make the switch to synthetic.
Since KIA does not offer the same info, for those interested, I thought I'd post this info from various synthetic oil manufacturers. Phillip

    Amsoil:
I heard that new cars require a break in period with petroleum before you switch them to synthetic.
Answer: AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil can be used during break-in trouble free. In fact, vehicles such as Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Corvette come factory filled with synthetic oil.

Since most new vehicles come filled with petroleum oil, it only makes good sense to change to AMSOIL at the first scheduled oil change interval. New engine components generate high levels of wear metals and can contain contaminants from assembly. By allowing the engine to operate with the petroleum oil until the first oil/filter change interval, the wear metals and contaminants are removed prior to installing AMSOIL.

    Red Line:
When can I put synthetic lubricants in my new car engine?
We prefer to wait at least 1,500 miles before switching over a new engine to synthetic lubricants. The seating of rings and wear in of other engine parts usually occurs within the first 500 miles and should definitely have been accomplished by 1,500 miles on today's new engines. Under 1,500 miles you should follow the manufacturer's recommendation for drain intervals and break procedures. Furthermore, waiting to at least 1,500 miles gives you the opportunity to assess the mechanical soundness of the engine and the opportunity to report any unusual conditions that may indicate a latent mechanical defect in your new engine. If there is any question about the mechanical soundness of your new engine do not install any synthetic lubricants.

Changing to Synthetic Oil in a New Car

    Question:
Changing to Synthetic Oil in a New Car
I have a new car. I have read not to change to a synthetic oil until there are some miles on the engine to give the rings a chance to seat. How long should I wait or how many miles should it be before I change to synthetic oil? Thank you for your time.

    Answer:
Modern vehicles can use Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil right from the factory. As evidence of this fact, more than 35 new car makes and models use Mobil 1 as factory fill. So there is no reason to wait to start enjoying the benefits of Mobil 1.

So here are 3 oil companies recommendations for switching to synthetic. I think I'm going to wait a while before the switch. phillip

I've been told that the diesel Soul has synthetic oil from the factory.
The users manual states to use oil spec API CH-4/ACEA B4 with is synthetic.

It was recommended by the Kia dealer to switch to synthetic after your first oil change. In other words, change the oil once with the recommended regular oil, then change over to the synthetic. I don't know why exactly. Perhaps it has to do with the engine break in. It may be in the owners manual. Hmmmmmm..................

After I hit 600 miles on my Soul (recommended break in period), I switched to 5w20 Mobil One full synthetic on a 2.0 sport model. The car seems a little bit peppier when it's cold versus the company's other Exclaim 2.0 model that hasn't yet been switched to synthetic. I've run Mobil One for years in various cars.

I purchased Mobil1 at Wally's today. It was on sale for $22 for a 5 quart jug. So I bought 2. While I was at it, I went to the KIA dealer and picked-up a new oil filter. I have yet to find in the manual the "part number". I'm sure a better quality filter at a lower price is available elsewhere. I paid $10 at the dealer. Now I just have to at what mileage I want to make the switch. Phillip

For those of us who have never changed oil before, but want to learn, can someone do a DIY step by step with pics?

I'd be happy to outline the change with phots once I do it. I have looked under the Soul, and it looks like it will be one of the easier cars to do an oil change on. phillip

I chose to switch to AMSOIL, for my first O.C. at 6200 km, or 3875 mi.

I will also switch all my other fluids to synthetic as they are due for their first change.

    Cheers,

It is the easiest car to change the oil on! No looking and sticking your arm in a random hole to get to the filter. It is right there next to the plug! I am glad to know my arms will not be cut up from getting the filter. I switched to Royal Purple fully synthetic at 1000miles exactly. I did feel the differance but I will always have Royal Purple in my cars.
