    Oil Changes

Hey guys I did my first oil change on my soul today. Switched to Royal Purple but had to use a Mobile 1 Premium filter because nobody around here stocks RP. Also rotated my own tires How many of you like to do your own oil changes? I like the "me" time I spend with my car and think it makes me appreciate my car even more.

I usually do things myself. My first oil change was the dealer because I didn't have time that day to do it myself. Every other one from now one will be done by me.

I change my oil unless a dealer change is free (like my last Subaru) or the vehicle has a ridiculous set up like my wife's ES350 (i.e. cartridge filter, etc., etc.). To me, it's quiet time. Don't really care about time with my car, but as a father of young children, it's nice to be able to turn a routine "chore" into some meditation time.

Don't blame anyone that doesn't change their oil as it's kind of a PITA to go buy the oil and then dump it for recycling, but it is nice to be hands on with a very simple maintenance task.

I haven't been doing my own oil changes for several years but will from now on. On my last oil change my KIA dealer did not change the filter, they said they did and charged me for it but they did not. They did redo the entire oil change but I have lost all confidence in their quick lube, if you have warranty work or repairs done they will be done by a certified tech but they all seem to think any warm body paid minimum wage can change oil.

Many threads on this subject warn against using anything but the Kia Oil filter! Even a Technical Service Bulletin on not using after market filter! Apparently it causes noisy lifters and worse. The Kia filters are pretty cheap too.

I had the oil changed for the first time on my 2012 soul. The dealer was very nice and told me that in California they recommend the oil changed every 5000 miles rather than than book recommend 7500 miles. They also told me that if the oil is changed by anyone other than a dealer buy and supply a Kia filter because it has a pressure valve in it, and showed me a cross section of the filter.

And the Jiffy Lube people recommend to change it every 3000 miles, which I suspect has more to do with profit than need. If you live in dusty conditions or some other extreme condition I could see it, but most of us don't have extreme conditions to drive in. What reason did they give for the 5k oil change that is special to California?
