    Going to change my coolant.

Id like to change the coolant in my Kia soul myself over the weekend but have never done a coolant change before. Is there a guide out there that walks me through it? Does anyone have any tips? I've heard it is best to go to a Kia dealer to get the right coolant, but does anyone know of one sold on store shelves that works just as well! Thanks!

we don't have any details on your Soul, but guessing its a 2010 model, usually suggests doing it every couple of years. I don't have maintenance info on the US 2010 Soul but have the Canadian one. Just follow the specs mentioned in your maintenance guide, mine just says "Mixture of antifreeze and distilled water (ethylene glycol base coolant for aluminum radiator)", so any coolant that meets this requirement will be sufficient. There is many places that do things like rad repairs that will do a full coolant flush very reasonable, just keep your receipt to prove its been done to maintain the maintenance schedule.

I would recommend not getting the stuff you mix yourself. It's kind of a pain to get the ratios right and you have to use distilled water.

Just get the stuff that is pre-mixed. All you have to do is dump it in. Easy-peasy. I would also recommend finding out what coolant to use from the dealer. Subarus need special coolant because of the all-aluminum setup and believe me, you need to use only Subaru coolant. If you use aftermarket stuff, it will corrode the inside of the radiator and engine.

I don't know if this is true for KIA as well, but with engines being made out of aluminum and being more sophisticated these days, it's worth looking into.

Ratios? The only ratio I've ever seen or used in my many years is 50/50 and you can buy distilled water by the gallon in any supermarket. However, anyone needing to be "walked through" the process should maybe leave it to a pro.

it's usually 60 antifreeze to/40 water in Canada good to -45C (-49F). Most places its premixed. It's better to get a proper flush through the system, than just drain and refill. Also if you do it yourself there is the problem of disposal of the waste.

Yep. Ratios. Out in Montana, we could have a 70/30, 60/40, 50/50/ 40/60.... just depending on the season.

The biggest PITA is..."oops, how much did I just poor into the radiator? I guess maybe 1/2 a gallon, I'll wing it." That's why I buy premixed.
