To clarify my statement, I've lived in Michigan all my life, 45 years. It is snowing here as I type, plenty on snow for months, and we get a pretty hot summer as well. Hence "most" people I know also live in MI. They use salt on the roads as do 21 other "salt states" So EVERYONE in these states falls into "severe conditions" as well.
Salavar, maybe you don't fall into the severe range, I have defined severe, you tell us, if you do, or not.

i believe we're saying the same thing - just in different ways -

if we take kia's definition of "severe" operation and then discover that the great majority of drivers in the u.s. DO OPERATE within these "severe" parameters, why does not kia label this as "normal" driving rather than "severe" - are they unable to see what is obvious to you and me ?

in reality the majority of kia owners SHOULD be changing at the 3750 mile point - yet the wording of the kia manual encourages many owners to stretch to 7500 miles - this is what i don't understand -

It's not just Kia that shows the longer intervals in the manual first...it is pretty much every car manufacturer. I think they all need to swap the maintenance schedules to make the severe category intervals show first in the manuals and then the normal intervals after that...saying if you don't drive in any of these conditions then follow this schedule.

It makes perfect sense what you say! I don't know why. I would think that the severe parameters would be the same world wide. And like you already said, IF Kia wants EVERYONE to change your oil every 3750 it would help cut down or warranty costs! Dosn't make sense.

I just did my first oil change (3000miles) and plan to go every 5K on oil changes after and follow the rest of the maintenance as laid out in the book. I got my oem filters from Cobra.

I'm sticking with 7500 miles per oil change. The way I interpret the owner's manual, almost everyone falls in the "severe" category. I certainly fall in that category just by virtue of being exposed to salt on the road. However, I interpret the severe guidelines as being exposed to at least one of what cobra259 listed above at least 50% of the time. If I am not exposed to any of the above at least 50% of the time, I consider myself a "normal" driver. Since I am not exposed to any of the above at least 50% of the time, I will use the normal schedule and change every 7500 miles. People who should follow the severe schedule would be people who live in the upper Plains, Alaska, taxicabs, pizza delivery persons like Soul Rush, etc.

Obviously more frequent oil changes are better for your car. Oil being the life blood of your engine. But dealers and garages have done such a good job of pushing this fact, now people are changing their oil more often than needed. So much so that California has started a campaign to enlighten the public in order to save oil and the environment. They have a web site stating the different car manufacturers recommended oil change intervals for their models. No Kia category at all! Hyundai though showed 7500 mi. pretty much across the board

No doubt changing engine oil more frequently will make an engine last longer. For someone like myself that lives in an area with extensive use of salt does it make financial sense to make sure the engine greatly outlives the rest of the car?

Some car rating groups calculate cost of ownership over some fixed length of time, the longer the oil change interval the cheaper the car appears to cost.

I am sure Kia and other manufacturers have calculated that shortening the oil change interval would not save very much in warranty costs over the length of the original warranty.

My former GM car had an oil life monitor and for my driving it always showed about 7500 miles between oil changes. For that car and my new Soul I went with synthetic oil and 6k oil changes.

One thing I did that was much shorter than the manufacturer suggestions was the first and second oil changes, at 2000 miles the oil was too black for me to leave in.

3000 mile oil changes are wasteful but some of us folks need the peace of mind that going "above and beyond" gives. 7500 miles seems to increase the risk of sludge and dirt buildup... and as any mechanic knows, once you get a dirty engine, it is really hard to clean it up again (internally). I don't like seeing black nasty oil. I like the 5000 mile oil change point because it is easy to remember when it is due (5/10/15/20/ etc), and it gives me peace of mind knowing I am going one step beyond the minimum requirements of Kia(7500). Synthetic or blended oil is another step better, a high quality filter is yet another step. I'm in Southern CA and I don't fall into the severe category. I barely get rain here, and no snow or (Yikes)salt. SOMETIMES traffic can be stop and go, but that is fairly short lived and I am almost always moving (not idling). Temps are mild, so...nope... easy driving here. 3000mile changes for the first 2, then 5000 from there... I couldn't sleep at night if I waited 7500 miles between changes. Just my 3 cents worth...
