Well, some moron backed into our 2015 Kia Soul Base (black)

I dont trust any body shops to do decent work without overspraying the rest of the car which only has 19k miles so far. So I am just gonna order the new bumper cover and headlight, and take the bumper cover into a body shop for paint. Then install it myself. This will guarantee its done right and the rest of the car remains as new. Its a minor repair, but these bumper covers are thin and dont take anything to damage them.

What is the best place to order OEM parts from?

Have any of you changed your own bumper covers on this generation soul? Is it fairly straight forward or is there a bunch of hidden fasteners and clips?

Hey Bobbed, that sucks. Sorry that ding-a-ling backed into your Soul. I know exactly how you feel about trusting someone to do the job just right.

I like these guys for OEM parts. I've also got stuff from kiapartsnow.com, but Quirk has ALOT of Soul parts.

Keep us posted and maybe share some pics if you're so inclined.

Thanks, I will check out the total after shipping to see if this is the cheapest OEM route.

For what it's worth too, someone backed into my '15 ! about a month ago.

Put a dent in the hatch, and scraped the top of the bumper.

Since I pay for insurance, I decided to file a claim, as it's an uninsured motorist in Oregon.

Yeow. Just a hair under $1000 for the work, including replacing the dented panel, removing and repainting the bumper.

I had no idea it would be so expensive, but all I have to cover is $300.

Yea, I am thankful the damage I have to repair is bolt ons. Headlight and bumper cover.

Couldn't you just remove your bumper cover and have it repainted? Or doesn't a body shop do that for you when they repaint?
Most body shops dont care about overspraying your car. By nature a body shop is a dirt place full of underpaid people. They dont care about spraying primers and touch ups within close enough distance to get on your car. They also prefer to paint panels ON the car as it is the easiest for them, as the risk of damaging fresh paint installing a bumper cover is high.

I will buy the OEM bumper cover, and have a body shop paint it for me. Then install it myself. That way I know the car doesnt get subjected to the body shop monkeys, and chemicals they may get on it.

Don't you love uninsured motorists...Was it a hit and run or did or was the fool caught?
It blows my mind in this day and age "we" as responsible owners/drivers need to carry extra uninsured motorist protection.
I'm sick of humanity, we haven't evolved, we have become selfish, entitled and greedy.

Another Bobbed Gem: "They also prefer to paint panels ON the car as it is the easiest for them, as the risk of damaging fresh paint installing a bumper cover is high."

That's because a freshly painted panel will often have to be blended into an existing panel in order for the repair to become imperceptible to the eye.
Simply painting only the damaged panel will likely have it stick out like the sore thumb that it is rather than "blend" into the surrounding panels!
F.W.I.W...Even with computer color matching texture and method of application (factory robotics vs body shop primates) comes into play.
While the color could be spot on technique and texture will also determine if the repair is imperceptible or not.
Orange peel or the lack of, will often be the dividing line of factory paint to "monkey" business.

It seems I may have offended you??? I know all about custom paint, cars, how to paint etc....I started building cars before I ever had my license at 14 years old. I am 38 now and have added building custom bikes to my resume. A new car, that has been garage kept, if painted with proper primer color, base tint, and clear coat will match close enuff for me to be happy. I will not be having the fenders, nor the hood blended on a brand new car so the body shop can slip thru an improper matching bumper cover.

If I wasnt waiting for the contractor to build my new shop I would just paint it myself. For what its worth, I dont discriminate. There are 3 people I trust to work on my stuff....Me, Myself, and I the rest are monkeys.......

Is this paint work I did on my Harley good enuff to be above monkey status??...LOL

Bobbed Gem #3: "I will not be having the fenders, nor the hood blended on a brand new car so the body shop can slip thru an improper matching bumper cover."

Most every soul and many other cars with plastic bumpers these days seem "improperly matched"
I suppose the difference in materials (plastic vs metal) make the paint do different things regarding drying/adhesion/color and make them seem improperly painted/color matched.
Well...now that I know you have set up a spray booth in your kitchen, I have gained a whole new respect for you! (Not)
You must have 1 hell of a kitchen exhaust fan though...

Bobbed...seems you know your way around body/fender/paintwork so I will not enter into a spraying match with you.
There are many that do not though and I was simply elaborating on the need to refinish panels while on the vehicle.
The average Joe/Jane must rely on said "monkeys", chimps and even gorillas for their mechanical/body shop needs as most are not as well equipped as you or I to do the work no less realize the efforts necessary to even get the job done!

Its all good, those pics werent taken for you specifically. The paint was actually sprayed in the corridor of the apartment complex I used to live in. The humidity in the South would get so high (80-90%) constantly so I could only clear coat at a certain time in the morning and rush the painted part into the apartment where the AC had it in the 50% humidity range. This helped keep the clear from getting a foggy appearance.

For what its worth, I do agree with you on all points regarding how and why body shops do things the way they do. Its just not gonna happen that way on mine. I am difficult i know this, I have been doing things my way for my entire life. I worked afternoon shift, and coincidentally the humidity was low in the mornings. So I would spray adhesion promoter (on fiberglass/plastic parts) primer/base/clear, then bring part inside and turn on bathroom fart fan and by the time I got home there would be no smell. Just wanted you to know it was my FART FAN in the bathroom that was utilized.......:tongue-new:

We are like minded as I can be quite difficult at times, myself.
Sometimes ignorance is truly bliss as the only thing worse than not knowing when it's been done wrong is knowing when it has been done wrong.
The relentless pursuit of perfection is a pendulum that swings both ways!
Perfection on the front swing and insanity on the backswing!
Personally...I won't take on an endeavor if I can't get it right.
Sometimes tools/knowledge/space are limited and what you ultimately wind up with is a compromised job and lots of aggravation in the process.

Well I removed the headlights and bumper cover and found the 2 part headlight bracket broken, the lower radiator support slightly bent back 1/2 inch. The windshield washer reservior damaged, and the fender bowed out. I reassembled it and have taken it to a body shop (5 star highly recommended) told them the findings. They have ordered the additional parts (all OEM) and will be handling the supplemental claim from here on out. I dont have a garage to work out of nor do I feel like dealing with the insurance company again, and never planned on doing a in depth repair. So my hands were tied. So its gonna end up goin to the body shop anyways, and the little lady will be gettin a rental car on morons insurance policy.........Kinda glad I dont have to do the repair myself.......

#23 ·
I thought that you were doing the repair yourself?
Damage was mush more extensive than the original estimate, which required body shop to submit a supplemental insurance claim. That and needing a rental car, kinda made doing the repair myself impossible. The insurance co wouldnt give me any more parts money, and i wasnt gonna pay outta my pocket for all these parts and materials.

After a not so pleasant talk with the body shop owner, a new fender has been ordered and the rental car has been extended. This kinda mess is why I am always so hesitant on letting anybody do any work for me. What a joke.

Well I got the call today that the Soul was done at 4:30 PM, so I went over after hours and took a look at the repair done by this "5 Star" Premier Body Works shop in Fairmont WV .....LOL, I get there and the bowed out, crinkled fender is still on the car. Now this is why I call em MONKEYS......This is about to get interesting, really lookin forward to this conversation in the AM....NOT

And, this guy has submitted a supplemental claim, and wants more money than originally estimated for "hidden" damages. LOL, I guess he forgot the OBVIOUS damages part.
