    Brake Light's (COULD) FAIL ! ! !

    C H E C K --- Y O U R --- B R A K E --- L I G H T S ---- !!!

    Today I was installing another mod . . . . a 3rd brake light strobe
Was taking longer than expected, but I had to do some cutting & spent time reworking my home made soul decal
But it all came together & set up a mirror so I could see it in action !
    1st time worked . . . nice
    2nd time, looking good
3rd time, NO ! NO brake lights at all ! tried some more, nothing !
Iím thinking it must have blown the fuse, Nope fuse good, put fuse in & tried again
    No, but yes, a delayed reaction I saw . . . .
I quickly took out the flasher relay mod & tried again, still very intermittent
Started messing with the brake switch & connection down by the pedal & seemed to be the trouble area,
Went to Kia global tech & got some info & went & took the switch out.
Bench tested OK, tried cleaning with some contact cleaner , donít think it helped
Reinstalled & it got more consistently intermittent action
My Soul has 1000 miles before the electrical warranty expires, I contacted 2 dealers,
Both couldnít do it till Monday ( = fri noon ) , Parts has switch in stock for 25 bucks
Kia hates & has almost told me they wonít work on my car under warranty due to all my modís,
This 3rd light strobe would be a ďKiaĒ no no too, just like my diy side markers, diy mirror flashers, diy hidís, diy hard wire/switch pizza sign,
Diy horn, diy stereo & amp, so I went & got the switch & installed & adjusted

Workís perfect ! Put the strobe flasher mod back in & works perfect !

Damm switch must have been failing before I started tinkering with the light mod.
Sure thru me for a loop, was sure the flasher relay screwed something up

I will post a DIY of the flasher strobe soon

Edit: I edited the title as to not scare anyone. Yes there is a coming recall on the brake light switch so KIA knows it could be a failure point. But it is always good measure to go around your car to check that all the lights work. I do it every time I get gas. It one of those preventative things that it is good to do. -Rodville

That's some good info, but I'm curious... Is this actually a Kia problem or did your switch go bad because of your strobe light?

^^^^^ Unrelated to installing mod ^^^^^^^^

But, I for one, at 1st, thought for sure, the flasher/strobe relay fried something
But, with my electronic's training & experiance, I figured some ECM or electronic circutry.
Virtually impossable to "fry" this type of switch (bs), would have blown fuse 1st.
    So Nope, just coincidence !
Infact, might explain the occasional shifter release not working 1st time
Now I'm really glad I did the mod, cause that lead to catching the intermitent failure.

My Soul get's Alot of use, just today, 25 delivery runs, 90 miles, 11 solid hours in 110 degree weather.
Must have worn that sucker out !

All 3 Kia parts guys I talked to didn't seem suprised, both dealers had part in stock & said they fail all the time.

A flashing brake light gets more attention -- especially when traffic comes to a sudden stop on the freeway and they guys running up on you have their heads up their backsides.

I have a nudge bar and a couple of extra tail / brake lights on the back of my van for this reason. The brake lights alternate back and forth several times, flash together several times, then go solid. People back off and stay back when they see them.

    Why any mod ?
    For performance ?
    For economy ?
    For ascetics/style ?
    For convenience ?
    For safety ?

    My reasons in order:
    Different ( to be )
    Cheap
    Easy
    Safety
    & to make people say wtf/why ?

The Old Grouch and Rick Busby like this.

    I suppose that's a legitimate reason.

And yeah...really...any reason is a good reason because it's your car and you should do with it as you please.

I did the strobe brake light on my scooter and found it would
not work using the frame as ground. Had to use the ground
wire of the brake light to get it to work right. I guess the
ground resistance was split over the two ground points. That
    could have been my problem.

And that is my fear - Kia will blame any problem I have with my car on my mods. The only things I really want are projector headlights w/ halo and side markers.

Kia will only blame a fault on a mod - if the mod is directly related to it. You really seem to have had a bad expereince with this dealer.... dont let it spoil your enjoyment of the car.
