Kia Soul 24 MPG on the highway?

Check out this video i made of my Kia Soul only getting 24 MPG on the Highway.

    Kia Soul FAIL - YouTube

I got a 2012 Kia Soul Red Rock Edition. I was told it would get 35 mpg on the highway. In October of 2012, they re-rated it at 28. BUT it's getting closer to 24.

With most cars, I don't trust the readout on the display. I'm keeping a gas log on my Soul, so I can accurately document mileage and the exact number of gallons required (as shown on receipt after fill up)

Were you using cruise control or not? Also, was the highway straight/flat, or was it curvy and hilly?

i was not using cruise control but my speed was not fluctuating. I picked a section of highway as level and straight as i could eye. This is definitely not a scientific study. I know my car was re-rated to 28 MPG highway in November. But I still think its lower than that.

Haha. Sorry that sucks but the video is comical. I've seen a couple 2.0's complaining about fuel economy on here. Can't help much as I have the 1.6 and doing 65 on flat hwy mine usually says 38-40.

Alright well next time, fill your gas tank full, and write down how many miles are on your odometer. Whenever you get to your next fill-up, log your miles, and see how many gallons you had to fill and calculate your MPG

Worth reading: HowStuffWorks "How accurate are gas mileage monitors?"

I use cruise control in 35 mph street zones, and cruise on flat portions of highways at 65 mph. My MPG monitor says it's getting 30.5 MPG on average, but we'll see once I fill up and calculate it myself

@MSNIDER, seriously 65 mpg! Oddly, in Hawaii I rented a 1.6 in 2011 and was getting 40ish. It's one of the main things i loved about the car. So much i bought one. I wanted the Red Rock edition because it looked awesome. I knew it was a 2.0 and rated lower at 35. But how could it be so bad compared to my experience a year earlier with the 1.6?

Haha I think you misread, he said he was going 65 mph and getting 38-40 mpg

one thing about the mpg estimation is that it takes a while after a reset or gas fill up to settle down to a close to accurate number, at least 10, 15 miles. It's safe to assume that the first couple of numbers you see after reset are completely inaccurate. I've seen it go from 8.5 MPG to 42 then back down to 20 in the span of 5 min.

However I do think the 28 highway MPG rating is a bit higher than what I am getting. I've had 2 full tanks of gas for only highway driving (road trip to Vegas!!) and they average 26 MPG based on fuelly calculation

good way to make a point with that kind of language on the video - you lost my sympathy vote right away.

The video doesn't prove anything, drop to 50 or 55 mph and show us the reading also its only for a few seconds, highway mileage does not mean 65 mph (actually it was 68 mph when it read) with regards EPA ratings. How many miles on it, hard to see looks like about 4500.

You're getting a rebate from Kia to help compensate too.

here's the EPA tests check out the times and speed averages for tests.
