    Timing Belt / Chain

    Hello, Question ?
I have searched here for this info & didn't find much.......

Who had done the Timing Belt / Chain job done on thier Souls ?
Who did you have do it ? Dealer or Independent
Did they want to change anything else while they had it torn down,
like water pump or something ?
How much did it cost ?

I seem to keep finding confict of information about my
2010 / 2.0 on if it has a belt vs chain

My brother wants us to do it ourselves,
I looked & it looks like a tight area to get to

    Any Feedback is GOOD feedback

I haven't done it on my SOUL yet but have done it on a few other cars. Ordinarily when you do a timing belt, given the labor involved on most cars just to gain access to it, if the water pump's under the same cover it is usually recommended to replace it too.....

If there's a tensioner (idler pully) that's also replaced at the same time.

Some cars use the timing belt to drive the water pump, others do not and have an external pulley that's part of the drive system, but if the pump's under the cover it should be replaced anyway....

I had a KIA Spectra that had the external pulley and the pump was under the timing belt cover. Don't know what the SOUL uses.

edit- the SOUL 2.0 uses a belt/tensioner....The water pump is under the same cover but is not driven by the timing belt but does have an external pulley.....

A HUGE selling factor for some cars like my 2009 Suzuki SX4 was the Lifetime Timing Chain.
I did have a timing belt BREAK, once, on I-4, in the high speed lane, at 80mph, in rush hour traffic.
That can ruin your whole day!

So, does the 2013 Soul, 1.6L, DOHC engine, have a belt or chain???

    Timing Chain

You need to snag yourself an account over at www.KiaTechInfo.com .... it has all the service manuals for your car. It's a pretty sweet perk KIA does for it's customers.

edit...I have to go over and verify what your reply says...It has a chain? A 1.6L engine has a CHAIN?

Well, I'll be damned if it doesn't....I stand corrected....

Well, finally the madness stops....I absolutely hate Timing Belts for they're a frigg'n PITA to replace.

BTW, I didn't notice on the 1.6L but do they have the water pump burried under the timing chain cover? That's another asinine evolutionary design snafu that's a burr in my saddle.....

I paid about 500 at the KIA dealer to do the timing belt, tensioner, and pump on my 07 Spectra.

Do not not do it. It's required at 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

My wife's 2004 Elantra (2.0 w/belt) easily went 100k before belt replacement was necessary.
Essentially the 2.0 soul motor is the same.
They recommend 60k for replacement but the belt is warranted for 100k in the power train warranty so go figure.
If you happen to have a Cali car, the recommended replacement for the t-belt was 100k.
Different belt...Nooooo, just better consumer protection in Cali is all.
While you never know about any mechanical part I believe 60k is over conservative and that belt will go 100k with no sweat.
Of course, you as an owner must do what make you warm and fuzzy and allows you to sleep at night.
We have become so use to the 3k oil changes and the 60k t-belt replacement benchmarks that it has become ingrained in our heads even when it's been proven otherwise time & time again.
PS...Do the water pump & idler pulley while you are in there as well.
PS#2: I got my o.e.m. parts (Mobis) from fourgreen on ebay. Great service and considerable savings over dealer prices. I always use o.e.m. parts!
