    ECO mode

ECO mode is nothing more than what older vehicle have, an OVERDRIVE on/off button. I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with the button on the end of the gear shift lever. With the O/D switch off, you have more acceleration than with it on. Use it wisely. It does improve gas mileage only if you leave it on.

ECO mode is not the same as what you are talking about. The overdrive button in older vehicles would keep them from shifting into the last gear...which was overdrive. Overdrive was/is another gear added to the transmission for better economy. Back when most transmissions were 3 speed, the final gear was a 1:1 ratio. With an overdrive transmission another gear was added and the ratio became less than 1:1, something like .9:1 resulting in better fuel economy at the expense of reduced power at freeway speeds. Turning overdrive off essentially turned your transmission back into a 3 speed.

Cars still come with "overdrive" but they no longer call it that. It's just a 4-speed, 5-speed, 6-speed, etc with the last gear (and sometimes the last 2 or 3) having a ratio of less than 1:1.

With ECO on, the transmission still selects all the gears, it just changes the points at which it changes to them. It is pretty noticeable if you drive with it off and then drive with it on. When it is on, the shifts are much quicker keeping the engine rpms lower and giving you less acceleration to save fuel.

I'm glad I took the eco mode off. My car is running faster with less hesitation and I'm getting more mpg!!!! Having it of for just a few hours, I gained about almost 2 mpg!!!!

I never use ECO mode. Makes the car too numb and un-responsive. Still get right around 30 mpg
