About 10k miles ago, I had to slam on my brakes to avoid running a red light. It made a horrendous noise and scared the crap out of me. It sounded like a horrible grinding noise. I pulled over to check that I didn't break anything. It was all good. The abs brakeing system sounds horrendous but that is how it works
people should try out this feature on an isolated road or somewhere safe and try it a few times, so you know what to expect.

Thank you all for your input. I have heard from Kia regarding my complaint. As you might expect, they advised to have the brakes inspected by the Dealer or another Dealer for evaluation. Kia emphasized they will be responsible in event of a manufacturers defect but other-wise the cost will be my responsibility. I will go out and lock the brakes up as some of you suggested. Will 40 mph suffice or how much faster? Various opinions in this Forum and elsewhere have suggested loose calipers and warped rotors. Could either of these cause noises as we hear when we have snow slush from the road? Reason I ask about the speed, in snow and slush the brakes make the noise when braking on our street with 25 mph speed limit. Since it appears I will have to dictate what to have checked, I would appreciate any other possible causes you might think of. In did log 1500 miles on US 71 and 75 and another 500 on state routes with rain and dry roads and comensurate braking (quiet braking). thanks again. p.s. our soul is a 2011 bought august 2010-I do not type well.

as it only happens in slush/snow etc as you stated and its okay otherwise then it can't be a problem on the brakes with loose calipers or warped rotors as this would happen no matter the conditions. Its the ABS functioning and you are just not used to it. They can activate at any speed, I've done it on mine at 15-20 kmph (10-15mph), just crawling up to my drive and as soon as wheel looses traction while you are braking it starts to kick in, its not based on any particular speed. If your driveway is long enough and you can cause traction to be lost, you can activate it.

Happens to my car right after rain or the slushy snow, only happens the first one or two times I brake then it goes away.
I have a 2013 Plus. 1300 miles.
I have the same noise, it is NOT ABS. It's a harmonic vibration, moisture related, and it is an eye opener. It has happened two or three times. You can slowly let off the brakes to roll forward at a stop light and make the groan - grounch (grin) repeat. A quirk but not a problem for me
